I have running schedules from the 80's that call for long runs for 3-hour marathoners at 10:00/mile. These very slow runs were supposed to improve "fat-burning".
Those anyone still do these very slow runs, or has their science been disporoved?

Yes, all disproved.
I just did one. Four hours. Mainly because I ate spaghetti and chicken for breakfast and didn't want an upset stomach. I serious doubt if I got much out of it though.

You are one of three things. A liar, a penguin or a moron.
It was discovered that they take too long to complete.
The people advocating these all died of boredom.
You're wrong on all three counts...and you forgot a comma.
At one point, I got up to working out on a stairmaster 4 hours a day because it wouldn't go any faster. At some point it became pretty obvious I wasn't getting any fitter. I bought a newer model that went faster and got in better shape. There just isn't much benefit to running that slow except to burn some calories and warm the muscles up. You can do that by crosstraining without all the pounding on the legs.

Scientific buzzwords may get thrown around, but there's no "science" to any training program, or for that matter, running shoe. It's all just fashion, like the Evans Gambit - back after 50 years.
If you're not running at 6:00 pace or better, then you might as well be sitting on your ass eating potato chips watching the boob tube.

Good thing he didn't tell us that the year I was out there.
A few of us in the back would have been watching a lot of tv.

Candidate for most inaccurate and foolish quote by a runner ever.

Still done--its called ultra-running now.

Use of the Oxford comma is a matter of style. It is not wrong to choose not to use them. It also isn't wrong to use them. It is just a choice that the writer makes.
Possible advantages of long slow run...
-Improved running economy
-Fat burning
-???
The only two things I could think of have superior alternatives, and I can't think of any other advantage of a long slow run like that that doesn't carry disproportionate disadvantage.
Joe Vigil never ran

I guess that's why you only lasted a year.
No most of the letsrun community still does these runs they just get in these boards and lie that ran at 6 min pace. Then rant about how great lydiard was.
Long runs decrease bordeom and personal relationships.
