This killer wasn't uneducated about guns, and I don't see anything suggesting he had the mental capacity of a child. There is a difference between that and being nuts. He knew what he was doing, he knew those people would die. Unlike a child, there isn't a lesson to be taught here.
You are right-- there are problems with the analogy for several reason, including my child being more likely than not to grow up into a responsible adult.
That said-- have a look at the things the guy wrote/said. He wasn't all there. He's more pathetic than anything else.
Until we get better drugs/treatment/whatever, some small percent of the population is going to be crazy. Killing them when they act crazy doesn't stop that.
