I think he protests too much. "I just know there wouldn't be this many people in the room if we were chasing a woman's record," the Connecticut coach said Sunday near the end of his postgame news conference. "The reason everybody is having a heart attack the last four or five days is a bunch of women are threatening to break a men's record, and everybody is all up in arms about it." "All the women are happy as hell and they can't wait to come in here and ask questions. All the guys that loved women's basketball are all excited, and all the miserable (people) that follow men's basketball and don't want us to break the record are all here because they are (ticked)," Auriemma said. "Because we're breaking a men's record, we've got a lot of people paying attention," Auriemma said. "If we were breaking a women's record, everybody would go, 'Aren't those girls nice, let's give them two paragraphs in USA Today, you know, give them one line on the bottom of ESPN and then let's send them back where they belong, in the kitchen."

In many sports, including basketball, we have the men's elite, and then we have other special categories: wheel chair, masters, juniors, women, special olympics, etc...

If a league of wheel chair athletes won 89 games in a row, we would congratulate them, but we wouldn't compare that to UCLA because they are a different category. Likewise, we can offer congratulations to the WOMEN'S record holders, UCONN.

Here's another example for runners. The world record for the marathon is 2:03:59. Period.

There are other records for different categories. The wheel chair record is 1:18:37 (Ernst Van Dyke), the master's record(40-44) is 2:08:46 by Andres Espinoza. The record for the special category of women is 2:15:25 by Paula Radcliffe.

Those who believe that UCONN broke UCLA's record are living in a make-believe PC land that has become so ingrained in their thinking that they can no longer even follow an unbiased argument with screaming, "Don't be hatin'"!

I'll admit, no female team can beat any D1 college mens team, but who cares?

Support? Absolutely. That's what this whole thread is about -- the massive support that is given to a sport that nobody cares about just because we live in a PC world. When will schools pull the plug on the funding of these multi-million dollar losing operations?

In general, men watch more sports than women. If you were to survey the public on who gets online to watch the NCAA XC meet live or the NYC Marathon live or March Madness or NFL football on TV, I am certain that more men are watching. The ball is in women's hands. If we are going to get true sporting equality, women have to step up and watch TV, buy tickets, post on boards, and really care more. Gino's whinning certainly won't accomplish anthing.

As a woman who frequents these message boards, I gotta hand it to ya. You hit the nail on its head! I feel like I'm in the minority (of women) when I watch track races on Universal Sports.

In terms of Geno's complaints about his team, I believe that some are valid. Women should receive equal attention as men in broadcasts, newspapers, etc. Often times, IF women are even mentioned in the paper, they're feats are relegated to the last page or so. Regardless if women's play is interesting or not, they work their butts off to win games. Now, I believe that Wayland Baptist has the legit record. They were still women playing college hoops. To say that women's basketball was nonexistent in the 50s is condescending to the women who played on that team.

...There's my 2 cents and then some.
