However, the high school boy who came in, in 210th place ran an 18:02 then most assuredly one (1), yes ONE major league baseball player can run sub 18 minute 5k. These results alone show how easy a 18:00 5k can be.

And none of the boys listed have 10.4 100 meter speed like Carl Crawford probably does. My whole point is that extreme sprint speed is mutually exclusive from endurance due to muscle fiber types.

And by the way, if you want to talk 5k times, add 35-45 seconds to every time you've listed. It puts these times into proper perspective.

I bet Bekele or even some other random 13:00 5K E. African could run 10.4 if he trained for it.

Thank you Reality Check...18:00 for a 5k is a lousy high school time-that is why a major league baseball player, regardless of how many fast twitch muscles his body is comprised off, should be able to run a mediocre 18 minute 5k...it is not that hard.

Do I think John Kruk could have done it...no. Do I think Prince Fielder could have done it...no. Do I think Billy Williams in his prime could have...yes. Koufax.yes. Drysdale, no. Johnny Bench, no. Lincecum maybe...it simply is not that hard...geez...

and adding 30 seconds to the 210 high school boys means that 205 still run a sub 18 minute 5k...

They run 3 miles at the Illinois State meet, not 5000 meters. Add 27 seconds.

Once again, Baseball players do not condition themselves to run for endurance. It would be counterproductive, unless there is a weight loss issue.

Of course 18:00 is not a good high school time. Just because lousy high school kids can do it why do you think baseball players can? Well, they could if they trained a couple months but they don't.

Actually they odds are that one out there could right now. It could be someone like Dennis Eckersly, a pitcher who ran a lot and was lean.

I've skimmed through this rather long thread. I see no results of an MLB player running a 5k, let alone running 18min. Surely, someone on letsrun was at a local charity run where a MLB player took part. There are road races every weekend in big cities where there are MLB teams. Nearly all of them are for charities and there is a good chance an MLB player shows up to one to show support for the charity. Didn't an MLB player run the Hawaii Marathon a year ago or so? I bet we can find some results for some of these guys. This is letsrun where people stalk anyone that has there name mentioned on here.

This doesn't matter at all. Your analogy is terrible. The OP asked how many MLB players could break 18 for 5k. 18 is very slow, nowhere near even a decent high school kid.

A proper analogy would be how many elite distance runners can hit a homerun against a JV high school pitcher. I would bet that this number is greater than the number of MLB players who can run an 18 minute 5k.

I ran professionally for 5 years, made a few world teams. I played H.S. baseball and hit .521 with 6 home runs hit at college baseball stadiums during the playoffs, all-star games and summer Babe Ruth Leagues. In H.S. I ran 15:21 for 5k and a steeple in 9:32. So, running with 'slow twitch' muscles didn't prevent me from hitting a few out of the park.

that wasn't my point. when this topic started, some dumbasses started saying "let's see a runner hit off of a major league pitcher just once." Many elite athletes are capable of running in the 5 & 18 min. range for the mile & 5k if paced. The problem is running for time over those distances is foreign to them. I believe if you give the top 10 athletes a few attempts over a week to 10 days 7 out of 10 can do the mile and 5/10 can do the 5k. They need to feel the process and be paced correctly. Alone without help maybe 1/10

Very impressive, but your baseball prowess was at the high school level. I was good at high school ball too, but we're talking several levels higher - college, minors (several levels here), then the majors. That's probably 4-5 chances for you to be filtered out because you don't have enough bulk to generate the bat speed needed to consistently hit 90-95 mph pitching. That's 4-5 chances for you to be filtered out for being too slow (I'm sure you're fast, but it sounds like you're not 10.x fast).

So even though you were a good hitter at a lower level, you didn't reach the majors so you're not part of the discussion. The people who do actually reach the majors are probably not running 15:21. Usually the skill sets are too different.

Going to go out on a limb and guess you didn't know Illinois runs 3 miles, not 5k.
