(Enough about Lasse Viren). New subject:
Best single workout to be a world class miler:
Achieve base of 55-70 mile weeks for minimum period of 5 mos. Have body weight of 120-135 (based on height and bone type). Have resting pulse of 25-40 bpm. Now, the workout: Once a week, for one straight hour, on the track: Sprint the straightaways and jog the curves. There was a world class miler back in the sixties and early seventies that did this work out to decrease his mile PR from 442 to 351. I'm pretty sure he got the silver medal in the 1500 in the Mexico City Olympics. This was the famous race at altitude that team Kenya defeated J.Ryun. e.g. Kenya used 1-2 rabbits to run Ryun into the ground with the successful objective of Kip Keino defeating him in which he did. Due to this very meaningful lesson, the U.S. government established a new Olympic training camp in Colorado Springs so from this point forward, U.S. distance runners would be trained better/be acclimated to altitude.
