Hemay not have been a 4:05 miler, but at 5K, he and Virgin are a toss up at worst.

Unless there are 10 13:45 guys I don't know about in the Pac-10, I think he'll manage to finish top-10 in his conference.

As for an NCAA top-10? I wouldn't bet on it, but I wouldn't bet against it. McDougal was 13th four years ago, and Derrick is a much better runner than McDougal was then, but he'll also be facing tougher competition than McDougal did. Fernandez and Derrick both posting top-10 finishes and making Gorney really shit his Depends (and maybe even notice that it's not 1998 anymore) wouldn't surprise me too much.

I would not have a hard time seeing a Chris Derrick as a top 10-12 guy at NC's Cross, again, this was/is a 13:55 guy and was only getting better when he came down with Mono,probably would have run 8:40 two mile or maybe better.

If he had done that, I wonder if the Virgin faithful would still be propping him up over Derrick at 2Mile and above.

Virgin had his career and greatness and he is clearly a Top 5 of All Time in HS, Derrick is/was not.

This is my take, too. Virgin is in the top 5 of HS distance runners all time, Derrick isn't in the top 20. It's a shame he got sick, as I'm sure he was capable of placing in my mythical top 10.

Jack Kafel is a good runner, don't get me wrong, he went to my high school, but he's a local runner and aside from doing very well at Steamboat one year, I don't think his reputation extends far beyond Cook County. Virgin took 13th at AAU cross-country nationals during the fall of his senior year (an Olympic year, no less) and took down many celebrated distance runners in the process. Way more celebrated than Jack Kafel.

It's just opinion, but if you're on here pushing Chris Derrick while hung up in Jack Kafel's jock strap, that's quite a stretch.

Not a statement about Kafel's prowess. You're right, he's a decent local racer.

The comparison is: Look at what a 50-flat 10 mile runner ran at Waterfall that day, 56:xx (Kafel) compared to what Derrick jogged (52:xx)

If the course was truly 4-5 minutes slow due to humidity and heat then that makes Derrick's run all the better.

i wouldnt really take too much into account what jack kafel ran as i think his serious racing ended a few months ago and probably did this for fun and to get some possible cash by being up the hill first. jack will probably be gearing up for xc or another attempt at a fall marathon later on before raving at lollapalooza after parties this weekend.

a look back on the results reveals its a slow course.

jeff joniatis who is probably one of the top two runners in the area(14:20, 30:0x, 1:06, 2:21) runs 52min

chris wehrman who has been in 2 olympic trials goes 5340

greg costello who has gone under 50 for 10 and run 2:20(pr'ing at the trials) runs 53

derricks didnt run out of his head but he ran a lot better than his time reflects.

and stop comparing virgin to derricks. virgin will be the 1st to tell you that hes the best of all time.

I am from Illinois - not of Derrick's high school caliber, but a 4:08 hs miler nevertheless. I ran a 15k the summer after my

senior year - a moderate to hard effort having never run a race longer than 5k - in McHenry county - clocked in around 49/50 minutes, I think.

I should have done a lot more of this - it builds strength. Kudos to Derrick.

Think about it: he runs 4:30-per-mile for more than 3 miles ... is 5:16 pace so hard for him?

Well then you were training way too hard or you couldn't race for crap. Or, your course was short! I've coached sub-29 minute 10k guys and sub 14 min 5k guys who rarely ran their ten-mile tempos much faster than 5:20 on rolling courses. I had a couple guys get after it and run in the 51 minute range and then they couldn't race or train very well for a couple weeks.

I live about 1 mile from the Waterfall Glen course where this 10 miler took place. I've been running there since the age of 12. I'm 39 now, so you do the math.

The course is moderately challenging, but nothing too bad if you're used to running on crushed limestone with some rolling hills. It was in the low 80's, sunny and humid last Saturday with no breeze, so 52:44 is a very solid time under the circumstances. I was watching the race (injured) and witnessed many experienced runners having trouble with the hot weather.

It really doesn't matter though because Mr. Derrick has already proven himself to be an exceptional runner with a very bright future. I wish him the best.
