Derrick runs 52:44 10 miler

two questions:

1) How Xtreme is the course?

2) Why did he bother winning by so much? I would only have won by about 10 seconds...

Decent enough.

and Nick Holmes ran 14:53 on a hilly road 5k in warm/humid conditions.

That's a tempo run for him but a good time for an average runner.

The course isn't Xtreme. It's just a cross country start and finish with 9 miles on a hilly limestone path in between. That kid was just cruising though. Very impressive run in hot and humid conditions.

He donated his $200 back to the sponsoring charity (as he should have).

why should he have? what's the point of the prize money if you get ridiculed for keeping it? Would it be ok to keep the prize money if you really needed the money or were poor?

NCAA atheletes aren't allowed to accept prize money I believe.

From my understanding, at least what I was told five years ago by my school's NCAA person, athletes are allowed to accept prize money up to the amount of the total cost of all gear worn (shoes, singlet, shorts, watch) and travel expenses (gas and tolls). While it doesn't add up to that much, it at least covers $200-$300 I would assume. Most athletes don't accept prize money if they are collegiate athletes, but I believe they can up to a certain extent. Correct me if I am wrong please.

You are allowed to accept actual and necessary expenses from a meet director, but cannot accept prize money. If a meet director wanted to pay for flights, hotel, gas, etc they could but you cannot accept prize money based on finish.

For a smart kid...Derrick is not using his head. I don't care how good he is...52:44 in the heat took something out of him. Mono 2 months ago...he should be jogging easy and recovering still.

I was referring to his NCAA eligibility. Don't blow it before you even start school. All the other runners took their cash (as they should have).

Prior to collegiate enrollment one can accept prize money but cannot exceed "actual and necessary."

And what constitutes enrollment? I'd imagine he already is enrolled.

Anyway, if there is any room for interpretation, the kid was best off looking like a hero in front of the crowd and donating the money back to the charity.

I'm not sure if this was put out there as impressive or not but John Gregorek ran right around 50 mins in Central Park when he was a senior in college. I'm pretty sure one of the Crooke brothers (Gregorek's teammate) ran around 52 mins.
