I'm sure you could say this about quite a few top female runners in high school every year. And it's not that coaches can't see it - they're short sighted and just don't care. Look at Boisie State the past couple years as an example of a coach blind to ED.
she had her eating disorder her junior year of xc. she did bad at FLN and then took a lot of time off to get better. she came back to XC better than ever, and then after running a couple of all comers meets was diagnosed with a stress fracture. i know for a fact if she wouldnt have gotten injured the national 2mile/3200 and 5k indoor and outdoor records would probably have her name all over it.
If I had been able to continue running forever would I have been able to set the AR at 5k, 10k and Marathon? I have always wondered?
bump again. Anything on this girl? That era of Cali/West girls was outstanding but with the exception of Bei and Fleshman, none of them ever pursued pro running (Siraki, Trotter, Craig for her unfortunate circumstances, Zeigles)
It's interesting now to look back on some of the NorCal girls of that era. My son's team ran at a relatively small invitational in Santa Rosa this year (Viking Invitational). I was looking through the fastest girls times on the course.
Some of girls at the top of the list are high school legends. But I noticed that the girl at number 13 has had a pretty decent pro career. Number 21 did ok as well. It just goes to show how difficult it is to predict which girls will go on to successful running careers post-high school.
Sara Hall has had a mediocre 'pro' career at best that lately has consisted of going out too fast in marathons and fading with an inability to break 2:30. And then of course instead of admitting that age is catching up instead her excuse is running isn't a priority vs adopting kids. Surprised she is still sponsored at this point.
Kara Goucher (Wheeler) was not as dominating in high school. Below are the top times for the 3200 all-time in MN and she isn't in the top 30. Also she ran her personal best time as a freshman and was obviously very good but she never improved from that in HS. She really improved as a junior/ senior in college which is rare. Her senior year in high school was 1996 and Joanna Deeter was the best that year and from what I recall she went to Notre Dame and had success before her career ended I think her senior year due to .... an eating disorder

I belive that Trina Cox, who placed high (perhaps 6th at FLN) never even won her league championship. she was a teammate of Stamps and Bei went to school on the other side of town. Going off of some old memories. the north bay was STACKED with talent for a few years there.
Anyone know what Anita Siraki is doing now? If I recall correctly, she flamed out quickly and somewhat spectacularly at Stanford. I hope she got through that stage of her life OK.

Kinda confirms the stereotype of what compels people to go into psychology.
If I understand her history I believe she never intended to run in college so her choice of study was probably decided earlier.
She did intend to run, but D3, Middlebury if memory is correct. At that time they were a very strong D3 program, so it was still important to her, but clearly education/lifestyle were bigger priorities than high intensity athletics.
