Incredible performance. Looking at the video, she seems to go through the mile mark at 4:42.5. Looks like she was going wide around a number of the turns. A bit more even pacing and tighter on the turns and she has several seconds improvement. And a bit unusual that she would be taking all her splits herself given meet timing and presumably coaches are timing as well.

it's just a habit or a tic from some people. Announcers pointed out Grace Hartman for NC State doing it either at ACC or NCAA outdoors last year.
I know that the announcer said her mile split was 4:41, but it appears that he was just estimating, and it turns out that he probably didn't have a timer at the exact 1 mile mark. So I think your calculation of 4:42.44 was the correct mile split.
And I calculated 4:40:81 for the 1600 split. How many girls in the country this indoor season have run a 4:40 1600 or a 4:42 mile? Not too many. This girl is something else!

That's just a habit of hers. I'm sure she knew that this meet would be recording her splits. She did the same thing last week when she ran the 9:42 3200.
When's the last time you saw someone that fast pace themselves as badly as Summer Wilson did?
I see it happen a lot. High school runners, especially girls, are often bad at pacing themselves correctly in a 3200 or a 5k.
True. But how many sub 10 girls have you seen go out like that and self sabotage it like she did? She's not just a regular HS kid that does that in some small meet.

I've seen superstars, girls as good or better than Summer Wilson, go out too fast and die. Did you see Elizabeth Leachman at NXN in 2023? Or Rachel Forsyth at Foot Locker in 2023?
Or the 2024 Nike indoor 5k where Elizabeth Leachman broke the 5k national record. Zariel Macchia was right behind her at the mile mark and she died big time.
A girl yesterday in the Nike 5k, Katie Berkshire, tried to stay with Blair Bartlett and Averi Lowen before fading badly and losing by more than a minute.
And even in today's Nike 2 mile, Addy Ritzenhein tried to stay with the leaders for about 1.25 miles even though she wasn't in good enough shape to do that, and she lost by 17 seconds.
All those top girls, including Summer Wilson, should know better. But as Elizabeth Leachman once admitted in a interview, "Somethings I let my emotions get the best of me and I go out a lot faster than I should."
Knowing what pace you should run is one thing. But overcoming your emotions to stick to that pace is another thing, and some girls struggle with that.
After seeing her run, I am predicting she will be the best female American runner over 5k ever.
It's too early to say that. But Zang does have a very easy, smooth stride. It looks like she isn't even working hard (although I know she is.)
Now that she seems to have put her injury problems behind her, it will be interesting to see what she can do this spring. I would really like to see her try a 5k.

Gonna be tough to do better than Hedengren though
Keep in mind that 2 months ago Katy Zang's 3200 PR was 10:35. Now Zang is faster indoors in the 2 mile than Hedengren was last year indoors, and that was after Hedengren had destroyed everyone by 40 seconds at NXN. And Katy "I didn't quality for NXN" Zang STILL ran faster than Hedengren.
How in the world is the 13th place runner at NXR faster indoors than the NXN course rccord holder? Truly crazy stuff. The most amazing 2 month time drop in US high school history. It sounds like fiction but it actually happened.
