WOW! HS Senior Katy Zang runs a 3200 in 9:42!

She was also a RunningLane champ in 2025 for XC

She broke 17 in the 5k twice in fall 2024

She had a ton of injuries from the fall of 2024 until basically the start of XC in 2025. Barely running during track last year (10:35 PR).
She was running 16:55-17:18 for XC in the fall of 2024. My guess is her fitness level that fall was around 10:20 ish for 3200m. Still a huge breakthrough. I hope she stays healthy this spring!

Seems like Indiana got a steal

Katy Zang's best speed rating this past fall was only 147, which is pretty good, but certainly doesn't indicate that a 9:42 would be coming soon.

Every speed rating point is 3 seconds, so being Zang being 20 points behind in xc means that Zang was in about 60 seconds worse shape in xc than Bartlett and Dudek. And that was only 3 months ago. So what caused Zang's massive improvement in such a short amount of time?

Her PR in the 3200 dropped from 10:17 down to 9:42 in just 5 weeks. I don't think even someone taking hard core steroids would drop someone's time 35 seconds in only 5 weeks. So no, drugs doesn't explain it.

And her time could have been even faster. She went out in 4:45, then finished in 4:57. So a better paced race would have had her running sub 9:40, which puts her in Mary Cain territory.

Does anyone know whether Zang is running Nike or New Balance?

based on the other post she had dealt with injuries so its likely she wasn't 100% in xc season. Did she rapidly improve or had she not been able to show her actual fitness level until now due to injuries and layoffs?

She was healthy enough to race every other week during the fall 2025 xc season, so she doesn't seem to have missed any training time in the past 6 months because of injuries.

If anyone finds an interview with her after yesterday's 9:42, please post the link here. I'm interested to find out what she attributes her massive recent approvement to.

Yes she ran a lot of races in XC but if you look at the start of the year she was running up to 90 seconds slower on the same courses than she was the year prior. Its pretty obvious she wasn't 100%. Other than what looks like a bad race at her xc state meet it seems like she's been getting better and better every race since early october. She ran an 18 second pr with a 10:17 5 weeks prior to this result.

Don't forget about Abby Hennessy's indoor 3k in 9:02.77 from a few weeks ago. That is roughly a 9:45 two mile equivalent.

Yes, I noticed that. She had run 10:35 a year ago. But an 18 second PR from the previous year is normal. A 35 second PR in 5 weeks is anything but normal.

I don't think any sub 10 minute 3200 girl in history has ever dropped her 3200 PR that much, that rapidly.

did you watch the race? i haven't found anywhere with either a video or splits but i dont know if we can draw the conclusion that 10:17 was an all out effort for her as that race was a solo effort as well. Based on her splits this race i dont think she knows what kind of shape she is in right now or her pacing would have been more even. Very easily could have gone out slower with the pace at the previous meet before picking it up.

The 9:42 is on milesplit

She ran 10:30s in the 3200 last year off very few miles per week and prior months of injuries. So she clearly is already that fast without even near maximizing her ability. 10:17 makes sense, an 18 second drop since last outdoor season and without injury in recent months.

But 10:17 to 9:42... crazy. A bit back on her TikTok she indicates that she's been eating more and trying to recover her period. Maybe more proper fueling?

She seems to cross train a lot. Talks enthusiastically about how much she likes cross training and how she recommends it to all struggling runners. Seems like she gets in great efforts on there; she posted a 60 minute session at 172 bpm. Interested in more of what she does in cross training.
