Katy Zang, a girl many people probably haven't heard of, just ran a 3200 in 9:42.84 at the Ohio Indoor State Championships.
Her 9:42.84 is roughly the same as the high school PRs of Blair Bartlett, Elizabeth Leachman, and Natalie Cook. And it's faster than the high school PRs of Katelyn Tuohy, Natazsa Dudek, Sadie Engelhardt, and Rylee Blade.
Here's the crazy part. None of her races this year indicated that she was anywhere close to all-time great shape.
Fall 2025
30th place - Ohio State XC Championships
13th place - NXR - (Only the top 5 qualified for nationals)
72nd place - Her national rank in Tully Runners Speed Ratings. (147 speed rating.)
Jan 31, 2026 - She PR's in the indoor 3200, running 10:17.56 .
Now just 5 weeks after her 10:17 PR, she runs an insanely fast 9:42! That's got to be one of the most surprising high school distance performances in US history!
