I believe he was writing about the US up until about 1960. If you check cases of espionage - and murder in the years leadi g up to 1960, punishment was quick and decisive. I was reading one of the “Book of Year…” that used to be put each year, this was for the year 1953, and people who were found guilty of capital crimes were generally executed within months(!) not the decades it takes now due to all the legal obfuscation. It was interesting that he mentioned the Rosenbergs. People try to still claim they were innocent but even Khruschev admitted in his memoir that they gave significant help to the USSR in building their atomic bomb. They were indeed guilty as the day is long. (Brokhovich tried to claim Khrushchev was wrong, but other scientists say the was merely trying to claim more credit for himself)

Thanks for the civil response, but I was really asking about the "all the time" thing. I don't think the Rosenbergs' one-off qualifies, but if there were many others I'd appreciate the info--I haven't seen much so far (and I've been looking).

Well, that assumes that illegal orders have or will be given.
It is not the place of military personnel to question their orders.
If a military officer (commissioned or non-com) gives an illegal order, that individual can be court martialed.
If a civilian commander (such as Secretary of War or POTUS) gives an illegal order, that individual can be removed and/or impeached.
If you simply don't like the orders the Commander in Chief issues, we have these things called elections every four years.

I think this is a very dangerous ad. Do the service members really, objectively know what is legal and what is not? Presumably if the order reaches them, someone in that chain of command above them think it is legal. Who are they to basically override that judgement? I don't think we want those lower down making that determination, which since we are all human might be swayed by political leaning.

Another way to look at this, Trump is the most despised person in the history of the United States. Not even Hitler or Mao could come close to how much hate and despise Trump and his family gathered. That’s a certain kind of achievement.
