I think Emmanuel Korir won his 2022 R1 Worlds heat in 1:48 with a 55 first lap. If you can get away with it, why not?

It's dumb if you're one of the last two in the heat who missed out on time. All they had to do was run 1:47 to go through, even if they finished last.
If you’re towards the back of the pack fitness wise it’s idiotic but for brazier and cohen it couldn’t have gone better
50% of the eliminated came from the final round - both 3 seconds below their season bests - who knew what the time to beat was.
That’s bad tactics.
Making everyone show up and run just to eliminate 5 people out of 32

Well consider their SBs before judging so harshly. If they’re a 1:46 guy, frontrunning a 1:47 isn’t so straightforward.
EDIT: DFL in H4 has a 1:46.67 SB, other guy was a collegiate

Guys are betting on themselves to finish top 6 of 8, intelligently, and maybe have a little something left for the next round. if you're not there, you aren't going anywhere as it is.
It's not easy to run that from the front when your one of the lower ranked runners.

Also, it's probably okay to go home early if you can't place comfortably in the top half of the slowest heat.

Addy Wiley is probably a lock to make the 800m team but after her it’s a wasteland
