I don’t think they knew that at all. They knew that they weren’t ready to run hard and take the wind from 800-1000 after splitting 1:53 with plenty of jostling and the like. The gap was about gathering for the kick
I’m fine with Nuguse not breaking the world record today. I don’t want our top runners in their best shape more than two months before the world championships. They need to save their best for Tokyo.
Laros has been a freakshow talent since age 17 so this should not be a great surprise. Super gifted and only 20 yrs old. Truth be told, I was thinking 3rd in 3:47flat. This race was a level beyond that, and it's great to see young runners getting it done against established guys. I expect Laros to post a huge mark at 3000m next year. Great range and can cover distances from 800-5000. Rare ability.

Fisher drops way down and goes 3:48.29? Very impressive. He's such a solid competitor. Always shows up.

Great run. I think Ritz/Nuguse made a slight tactical mistake in chasing the WR as opposed to a 3:44 type time (with a kick). The best shot for the WR will be chasing Jakob. The crazy fast early 1,000 and Yared not gathering there and dropping a sub-14s up front was the only way I could see him losing to Laros. As amazing as Niels is he is not yet comfortable going with the a sub 1:53 halfway pace in a mile. So the gap was going to be there, Yared just needed some gas at the end. It’s all good, though and the main headline of the race to me is Yared is crazy fit, Laris has arrived, Reynold has a mental block, and Hocker/Kessler/Wightman are a bit underwhelming at this point for what we expect.

They've raced a lot more April/May races than usual this year as well. It will be interesting.
Not overly surprising. I kept an eye on Laros throughout the race, and especially when he moved to the front of the second tier. There was still plenty of time, given that Nuguse was chasing a record. Laros moving ahead of so many name brand runners in that second tier meant that he was feeding off the confidence from European Team Championships last week.
That 5000 victory in Madrid was a breakthrough performance for Laros. There was a related thread here and it was laughable how many posters tried to scoff at it, based on final running time. It was like only the OP and myself knew what we were looking at. It was 102 degree weather and Laros looked totally different than his recent self or any other distance runner who ran that day. He was trailing badly midway on the final turn then by mid stretch was clear by daylight. He eased to the line while waving his finger number one.
Laros' challenge is to remain confident and aggressive when Jakob is in the race. That's who he has been compared to, fairly or not. Consequently there is some intimidation and a big brother/little brother dynamic. The other top 1500 guys have defeated Jakob. Laros hasn't come close.
My hot take from today was that it strengthened the odds of the US "Big 3" being the team.
Nuguse goes 3:45 even while blowing up, Hocker PR'S, and Kessler (who I'm least worried about at trials) runs 3:48, faster than any other American on the day besides Fisher, who won't be in the 15 at Trials.
Strand is really good, but Kessler runs his PB on a "bad" day, and Strand doesn't have the foot speed to match a 1:43 guy in an unpaced race.
Not saying the team will be Nuguse, Hocker, and Kessler, but today made that seem more likely for me

Based on that, I pick him to win the 5,000 in Tokyo. That's incredible speed-endurance for a 5/10 guy, especially a double Oly medallist in those events He must be chomping at the bit now.

Laros ran around 53.4 from 1200m-1600m. However, most of it came from the final 100 which was 12.7!!! Jakob ran 3:28.68 as a teenager. This time is within the ballpark of that.
Reynold ran 12.6, although he placed further back. Insane finishing kick for both of them!
Yeah people saying Laros would have run faster had he gone with the front guys earlier don't understand that's not how it works. He might not have had the strength to last had he gone earlier. Laros is quick and used his conserved energy to sprinted for the win.

Then when the pack ‘slowed down’ (i.e. did not follow Nuguse and especially Habz, who closed the gap very controlled), Laros was almost last. He then attempted to pass at 700 to go but had to abort his effort because of traffic. And when he really accelerated, he found himself in lane 2, even 3, in the curve. So a big win on class and speed, but with room for improvement!
Yeah I think Strand has a 3:45 in him (he wouldn’t have won though due to the pacing, it would have to be even). Kessler won’t make the team, between Hocker and Strand for first.

He’s only 20. Give him another couple of years of racing experience. The guy will be unstoppable. To win today off not the best tactics just goes to show how talented he is.

Kinda a PB for Kessler. Like 1.5s slower than what he ran indoors, where he was pulled 1609m by Nuguse with perfect pacing, compared to Strand's 3:48i where he had to run a bunch of extra distance, had a huge kick, and won the race. Similar to today, where Kessler got towed along for the entire distance and lost, while Strand had a classic big kick, won comfortably, and still ran 3:48.
I stand by my Kessler winning in 2028 take, but I think Strand makes the team over him this year.
