AND set defeating the man who had won the Olympic 800 and 1500 titles the year before, NOT being pulled to it by faster runners.
Don't fall for folks saying it is better to look at ranking lists, that's not equal across the board. The women's 2k steeple all time list #110 not the same as #110 for 400m as an example.
3k is at best a difference 46 sec. 7:17 for men is 8:03 for women and over the years we see the women finally closing the gap and getting down to times that they are capable of running. +10-11% or so. Although the 800m for some reason about 12%
The girls new 2 mile record 9:17.75 is about equal to a boys 8:24 2 mile. Hedengren is amazing.
Webb is a HS legend who did not fulfill his promise on the world stage. LOTS of US 1500 runners before and after Webb performed much better at the Olympics and World Championships.

We will see if it stands the test of time. Webb's record has.
One other metric: Webb's 3:53 in 2001 was the fastest mile by ANY American that year.
Yes, but the 1500 had already overtaken the mile as the primary distance for major competitions in the US and elsewhere. The top 2001 US time of 3:33.89 for 1500 was much superior to Webb's time,

One thing that always seems to be lost is that NXN was run in awful conditions the past two years and is really an outlier meet. This, is why there were so many topsy turvy results. The gelatinous conditions favored small, light runners who don't do well at track but excelled in mud. From a pure time perspective in the 800, mile and two mile SE clearly has a legacy of being one of the top HS runners ever. Titles are not everything, particularly when conditions are awful at "marquee" events. Anyone who knows anything about running doesn't place too much stock in NXN.
Jane Hedegren won in 2024 and she did pretty well on the track. She is also like 6 feet tall. Jojo Jourdan won the boys race in 2023 and he ran a sub 4 mile later that year. Not exactly poor performance on the track. That’s 50% of the winners in the two years in question.
Maybe Ritzhenhein fits your description (I don’t know her track success), but look at the prior 4 years — NXN was won by Riggs and Touhy, both of whom excelled in both XC and track. Not exactly the characteristics of an “outlier” meet on the girls’ side.

According to world athletics tables its actually worth an 8:15. 1177 points
Webb’s 3:53 is clearly superior. The real question is: Is Jane’s new 9:17 two-mile superior? I say yes.
