How does Martin run "only" 3:53 and not catch those guys. He's a 3:48 guy taking the baton far back but within catching distance. Was it really windy or rainy or something?
I was there, seated by the finish line. Martin took the stick with Murphy and they both went out very slow, with Martin looking directly at Murphy, almost like 'I'm following you'. They stayed conservative for more than 800m, then on lap 3, Martin moved on the back stretch, realizing they were running out of time if they wanted any chance. Greene (WA) and Reinhardt (OR) sat on A&M for a while, and had Martin moved sooner (or Murphy), there is an outside chance they could have caught them by the last turn. Martin made up a ton of ground in the last 700m and Murphy was never able to go with him, but they never really had a chance. 'Nova's 400 leg really hurt them and their 800 wasn't much better.
