Just to put things in perspective, the winning 1500 time in Rio was 23 WHOLE SECONDS SLOWER than last summer in Paris. This is enormous for a 1500. At that level, anything over 5 seconds is a massive differential.
What factors do you think contributed to this? Coastal heat and humidity?
Do you believe centrowitz deserves the same caliber of legacy bragging rights as Cole Hocker?
Perfect tactical race. 50.x last lap.
Google the runners that Centrowitz beat. ALL total stud runners, including a super fast 800m runner who was an Olympic silver medalist and gold medalist in 1500m. Also a 3:26 guy was in the race.
the race was stacked and the superstars didn’t race as smart as Centro.
before super shoes and the field was a bunch of 3:2x guys…so not like he beat a mediocre field.
We don’t have to overrate him though. I know you feel the need to because people are saying that his Gold should be revoked…which is obviously crazy. However, his Olympic Gold is easily the worst of the modern era. It stemmed on the fact that nobody decided to push the pace. Winning in such a slow time is not impressive at all. Jakob’s 2021 and Cole’s 2024 are 100 times more impressive. Both in Olympic Record times and in the top 20 fastest times ever. Still a great win though, and will forever have gold.

Id argue Centrowotz had a tougher win because everyone in the race was still with the pack 100m to go. Cole really got lucky that Kerr was too worried about Jakob and blew his wad early.
Garbage take. Running 3:27 is 100 times more impressive than winning in a sprint finish in a time 30 seconds slower.
a championship race is a race, no matter the pace. anyone who's ever raced at a high level knows this.
centro was by far the most brilliant tactician on that day and have by far the deadliest kick in the field. he is as much an olympic champion as jakob, cole, el geurrouj, and coe
I know there is an article that says I stole a beautuful painting from the Whitehouse. I've never been to the Whitehouse before, but yet the article is still up last time I checked.
Wait...I thought you I recalled it being that you fought a Whitehouse official after he spit on you. That's what the Washington Post article said, at least.

Only if you lead that 3:27 from start to finish AND WIN. Otherwise an Olympic gold is an Olympic gold.
Willis might have been the only clean guy in that race.
And well done to the US production team for spending one full minute replaying the Kenyan getting tripped. At least they didn't cut to the women's shot put.
To the question of whether Kwemoi's fall spoiled the Kenyan strategy of having him pace Kiprop, I just don't believe it. Kwemoi was coached by Renato Canova, whereas Kiprop had a different coach, but more importantly, no Kenyans had cooperated like that in many years, and it has not happened since with the exception of Timothy Cheruiyot pacing his own teammate Elijah Manangoi in 2017. In the 1980s or 1990s, it could happen, but with the monetary incentives in the last quarter century, the only possible pacers are teammates, especially where the one is paying the other to do it, which is how Morocco's El Guerrouj had a personal pacer in Adil Kaouch.

this is a dumb discussion
I agree with most of what you say.
But I still hate the race.
Hating the race is fine and totally reasonable. I tend to agree with you there. However, insulting and belittling the competitors, like 430Miler did, is absolutely pathetic. It would make his coach/his mom's special friend spin in his grave!
People on here only like to complain... Race has a pacer? "BrO bRiNg BaCk rAcInG" race doesn't have a pacer? "tHeYrE tOo sLoW" pick a side and stick with it... let them race and see crazy fluctuations because that is the glory of racing OR make it a controlled environment with a pacer every time.
Also, I for one, and EXTREMELY glad that the crappy no-fun sit-and-kick slow times era is finally over the mid early 2000s was TERRIBLE as a track fan. Watching knuckleheads like Mo run 28 mins and win 10ks or DL 5Ks being won in 13:15 was a joke.

Uhhh... it's called RACING!!! Probably one of the BEST tactically run race of all-time. IMHO Coe's Oly Gold in L.A. 84 was probably the best tactically run Oly 1500m of all-time. He too, had to fight for positioning during the race (200m to go-holding off Cram). If either Seb or Matt don't win those battles neither would've won gold. Yes, Coe's time was faster, but it's easier to navigate tactics when running fast compared to a jog and sprint when everyone is bunched up. Had Matt hesitated the slightest he would've been toast...but he didn't!!!
Coe is on record with his plan for the 15 at the 84 OG and it was all about Cram once it became clear Ovett was ill and would not be a factor. He noted Cram was very hard to beat if he was in front with 400 to go and that Cram liked nothing more than steaming away with open track in front of him like Morceli. Therefore Coe was committed to not allowing Cram to pass on the final lap. Just before 200 to go he senses Crams attack from just behind and responds immediately and decisively.
Cram was not quite in his 100pc shape because of his early-season injury setback but he was well on the mend and Coes tactics were perfect. Coe would have won anyway even if Cram was five meters closer.
Cram said afterwards that if he was told he would run 3:33 in the final he would not have believed it.
Ovett saw the race finish much later and called it a "gem*
It's still pretty embarrassing to run a time that slow at the Olympics. It's almost disrespectful in a way. I have no idea how that could have happened. It's low effort and lame. Kudos to Centro for winning, but he was nowhere near Hocker's level.
I guess it was just a question of time before the typical LRC idiot would show up.

Or Lagat winning a WC in 13-high. Or Geb sitting and kicking in championships his entire career.
