Teare should run USA's like everyone else should, but I am a bit more optimistic about his chances in the 5k though. He's run 3:50.1, 7:30, 12:54. It wouldn't be surprising to see him in sub 12:50 shape come outdoor USAs. Only two on that list I would say will certainly be superior than Teare at this point, assuming they both are stepping onto the line in top form (and thats not guaranteed). Of course Teare isn't guaranteed to make the team, but his chances aren't any worse than anyone but Hocker and Fisher. Is Jacobs the only one listed above running at indoor USAs?
I'm thinking 12:52/12:53 edge to Teare but it could go either way. Teare just ran 7:30 with a quick finish, has a 12:54 pb to his name, and according to Hocker is in great shape. He seemed disappointed by his 3k, so I think he'll come back with a better 5k. I also don't think Hocker is ready for a sub-12:50. As great as his 3k was, it'd be a 10s pb, and 2 weeks ago would've been an AR.
For the record, I am rooting for Cooper Teare to be successful. I think despite the fact he competes at an exceptionally high level he is in a bit of a confidence funk.
This happened to the WR-level, talent-laden Yomif Kejelcha too. I believe Teare has the most talent among the current crop of USA runners but is only supported by quick times at the moment and not passion fueled victories. He showed us a glimpse of that as he and Hocker were coming up. We need to get him back there.

This is a blazing hot take, I like Teare but I truly don't see the argument for him being the most talented US runner right now.
Even if you want to say that Bowerman set him back after college, Hocker/Kessler/Nuguse were better at the same age. Teare looked better than Fisher in college, but Fisher is obviously in a completely different tier now. Plus there's Nico/Blanks/Wolfe coming up at 5k, they're all huge young talents and now that Nico's running 3:50 I don't even think Teare's got the best range in that group anymore.
I agree that he isn't the most talented right ...hocker and fisher are clearly in another league. I think hocker coming up underneath him is what set him back. As soon as teare went to another level with his 3:50 in college, so did hocker. He's watched hocker have an insane amount of success and wants it too, but getting beat by your younger teammate and watching him win titles/make teams while you barely miss out has to be wearing on him. track is mental like any sport, wins beget wins, confidence builds on itself and you can force your body to do things that didn't seem possible. If he runs under 12:50 in this 5k and buries hocker, I think he might be ready for outdoor. But he absolutely should've tried the 1500/3K double at USAs. No hocker or nuguse, and he'd have a chance to beat kessler, and if he did that, he'd undoubtedly be in the conversation.
Blanks isn’t running because he’s still a student at Harvard. if he made the team he couldn’t go to China due to academic schedule. He’s running at BU next weekend and then The 10

just making stuff up here
He’s running the 3k at BU. Nguse is scheduled to run it as well. It’s the last chance meet. He’s running The 10 in March. And he’s a student at Harvard. Not sure what you are questioning.

There’s nothing on the BU schedule for next week
This meet is never on BU's schedule, it's run by a different meet management company:

I think you might be misremembering this interview (skip to about 1:55 for the relevant bit):
He says he's planning on racing the 3k at USA Indoors, not BU. Might or might not go to Worlds if he makes the team.
(Edit: ok, you're not misremembering given the recently posted link, it's just confusing people because there are two different BU meets. There's the 2025 BU Terrier DMR Challenge this weekend with Hocker/Teare in the 5k. That one doesn't have a 3k. But the last chance meet linked above is a week later on March 2. It does have a 3k and Blanks is entered.)

Yea. He was considering running the USA this weekend but just wasn’t going to work with his academic schedule. He will run the 3k with Nguse next weekend and then The 10
Teare is the most talented runner the U.S.? That's a crazy take. Right now, Fisher, Hocker, Goose, Kessler, Young, Sahlman, and Strand are more "talented" than Teare and probably one of those high school kids. Someone considered having the most talent won't choke at nearly every championship race. All Teare has is a fast time here and there, but by he end of the year he's nowhere to be found.
Hocker's capable of 12:48 right now, figuring that he dropped from 7:29ic to 7:23 at 3k, which would mean a ten second drop at 5000m from his pr of 12:58. Both those 3k times were in races with Grant Fisher pushing the pace. He might just settle for the win and run low 12:50s to get the standard, especially with no better runner to push the pace, but 12:48 is his ceiling.
