A 7 second PR in the mile? Nobody finds this suspicious? Not necessarily him but the track? Has there ver been a day like this in the history of the sport? Everyone basically getting monster PRs, multiple world national and age records? All in one meet?
He ran 7:36 in the same race Strand and Wolfe ran 7:30 in.
That was a sign
I thought the sign was his ncaa cross country finish. Strand and Martin were the 2 names after ncaa cross I couldn’t wait to see on the track
If Gary just ran 3:48, and guys like Yaseen Abdalla and Wolfe have proven to be at his level or faster on the track, there’s gotta be 3 or 4 guys in the NCAA right now who could’ve broken 3:50 in this race.
I wish I could say the indoor mile is going to be crazy but it’s probably going to be won in 4:02 by someone who flew under the radar. The indoor 3k will be very interesting
No it doesn’t work like that. Just because one person had a breakthrough, that doesn’t mean everyone else will.
However, I do think Parker would run great times in the mile / 5k right now.
But you can’t just assume every 3:52-3:55 guy is a sub 3:50 guy because Gary is.

Actually, I was on a solo gig doing track repair the night before from midnight to 3am----just looking for loose boards and such. My great-great-great-great-great-grandfather is Rodman Wanamaker, so I have free access to the building for life.
While looking around, I suddenly realized that there was so much extra track inside of the rail. I moved it in about 3.14159 inches all the way around. I don't think it had any effect on the times, but now I am beginning to wonder;)
He negative split AND was in lane 2 a lot of the race. Gary Martin is going to beat Strand for the national title
You mean 2nd and 3rd behind Nathan Green, right? He's got the best resume in championship races. Remember, there's no rabbits and no pros time trialing at NCAAs. The fastest seed usually doesn't win the mile.
As fun as it would be to see Gary Martin win college nationals, it's not going to happen this year because he doesn't yet have the racing instincts or the gear change to keep up in the kick or even to be in the right position when it comes time for it. He'll waste energy looking for a spot and trying to move up. Who's to say that he won't be capable of breaking away in a couple years, however?

Well, Gary ran SMART at Millrose. He was disciplined enough to go out DFL, then gradually pick off the other guys as they fell off the pace, and get a great result.
Man seems like perfect timing for centro to retire. College kids running faster than his hyped up mile run when he ran 3:49 with pacers.
I was in town for that race. It was cool. Sub-3:50 was so rare and awesome back then. He ran that on a HS track down in Portland (Jesuit).
Now sub-3:50 is a dime a dozen.
But seriously, the indoor tracks, with their spring-like effects, must be worth a few seconds. Honestly, the bi-carb can't be worth that much can it? And the Dragonflys?
It is wild to think that Centro is slower than these kids.
I sometimes eat peanut butter toast before a run, especially on these late-sunrise mornings, and I'm curious if the advice to follow a run quickly with a snack/meal applies since I'm probably still benefiting from my pre-run food. When I do eat afterward too I'm sluggish at work.

I think it’s the result of a couple of factors.
1) Training has generally improved and athletes are putting an emphasis on getting a lot of threshold work in. In Centro’s day milers would let championship races go a lot more tactical and I think sometimes there was a tendency for milers to sacrifice some endurance in training to get a little bit more speed work in, as it was very much a necessity then.
2) Technological improvements (shoes, bicarb etc). I think these are all good and even that training in super shoes allows these guys to get more quality volume in, which likely has exponential effects over the years
3) Centro also just wasn’t that good of a time trailer relative to his abilities. When he was Gary Martin’s age he got bronze at worlds in 3:36 with a 51 last lap, but his PR wasn’t all that much faster than that. He was likely a better 1500m runner than Nick Willis, but his PR from the same era was a second slower. If Centro was a 21 year old NCAA runner right now, he’d likely run 3:52 before NCAA indoors, but then position himself the best and win anyway despite racing 3:48 guys (imo Green will still win NCAA indoors this year in the mile)
