There is an old saying: "you never want to get too far away from speed." I think that applies to the marathon as well. If you do not run some stuff fast then you will just run slower in races. That is all folks.

This is a bad example because, especially for the marathon, what the OP describes is the most true. You’d probably run a faster marathon with higher mileage and dropping your Tuesday intervals.

So it’s literally impossible to run 9 miles easy everyday for a week? Dummy.
He’s being nuanced, and he’s right. Every run is stimulative in some way, and, heck, you might be feeling so good on “just a run” that you hammer the last few miles. You might feel so good that you launch info an unstructured fartlek. But even “just a run” gets you in shape or enhances recovery if done properly.
I’m not sure if I agree with the premise of the thread, because I never got up to 60mpw in high school and I got pretty damn fast. Now, would I have run just as fast merely running 60 mpw with no workouts, maybe just racing? Perhaps, but I sincerely doubt it.
For someone who is injury prone or who really just does want to “run base,” then, sure, go ahead and just go run an easy 60mpw for 12 weeks. However, I think the much better plan is to go out and see how you feel and launch into an unstructured tempo and/or an unstructured fartlek during the week. Plus hill sprints/strides. Don’t plan the “workouts” and only run the workouts comfortably hard, never going to the well. Nothing about the week is to be planned other than covering 60mpw. That is the great compromise.

This is true, but if you were to look at the training of all the runners at the marathon Olympic trials, the one common thread you would see is that they run a lot of miles.

I really don't know why this is so controversial, every run used to be called a "workout" until recently. Some workouts/runs were hard, some were easy. Why people wanted to stop calling easy runs a workout is kind of dumb.

What do consider recently? I’ve run for 35 years and have never heard an easy run referred to as workout.
