Moving that weight 1609 meters in 5:21 shows very good aerobic fitness.
Impressive for a guy who could go run 10-low and 20-point any day of the week.
Moving that weight? As a HS senior he was 6' 162, he's probably not much more than that now. That's about the same weight as Jakob. Also seeing his splits, that was absolutely not an all out effort
You misunderstood.
Nobody said that he is heavy for a sprinter or an adult male in general. (Though he's definitely gained since HS, ffs. Just look at photos.)
But compared with elites he is absolutely massive for the event in question.
Go down to your local 'night of mile PRs' type of meet, and let me know the percentage of people under 5:20 who are over 165 pounds. I'll wait.

Lol!
Peter Snell weighed at least 170. He was olympic champ at 1500.
Solinsky weighed 168 when he blew away all us hs runners in footlocker xc. [ later 165 , broke 13:00 and 27:00]
Paul McMullen weighed 175 and was US Champ.
Craig Mottram was at least 165 and was ranked #1 in the world [ 5000, mile?]
Theyve been trying to fit poor Mathew into some hero slot for years now--not that he isnt a fine athlete!-running and jumping, but hes just not quite making it. Hes game and fiesty, but not ready for prime time. Good lad! Somebody wants him, or a guy like him, to play a role. Theyre gonna have to keep shopping around.
Would really like to see him try some throws and pole vault. He's got potential as a decathlete. His 100, 400 and long jump are amazing. Minimal training to get the 1500 to acceptable level for a decathlete.
that's bad. idc if he is a sprinter he is an elite athlete for Gods sake
Agreed. back in 80's the sprinters in our club, not even world class, used to do the weekly club time trials with us, comfortably 5km under 19 or 20min. In one case a 10.4 (hand timed) guy was put into a 8km relay segment because we had no one else (was actually driving our bus), and cruised a 31min
Not sure why being sub 10 sec would make them slower
Actually I think Michael's time was from a theoretical discussion. But he has run sub 44 and sub 20 so it seems reasonable to think he could have run a sub 5 mile in his prime.
Michael Johnson and many other Clyde-Hart trained sprinters did a hilarious amount of volume. Johnson probably could have run into the 4:40s, if not faster. The guy did aerobic tempo runs during the offseason.
Also, I haven't seen anyone mention the women's side yet but 400 training for women is significantly more aerobic because of physical differences between men and women. There is a video somewhere of Allyson Felix running a 4:55 mile during her fall training as a conditioning test.

still can't believe people think he just did this "for fun"
Boling can see the writing on the wall and understands he needs to evolve
keep in mind he also went 6'8" his sophomore year of high school then decided to never do that event again
he's not on the same level as Mondo in terms of decathlon potential, but he isn't far off either
