Valby won five NCAA titles in a year (xc, 3k and 5k indoors, 5k and 10k outdoors) to go with xc course records everywhere and college records at indoor and outdoor 5000m and outdoor 10000m, 14:51/30:50, fourth at the Olympic Trials in the 5000m and third at the Olympic trials in the 10000m, plus 10000m Olympic finalist. Tuohy may yet close the gap but it is not very close right now.

Nadia Battocletti ran pr's of 14:31 (4th) and 30:43 (2nd) in the Olympics. She ran 3:59 pr for 1500m after the Olympics. That kind of 1500 speed probably accounts for how she could keep pace at the finish of slower Olympic races with low 14, low 29 women. I would expect her, if health is there, to smash them next year.

I think Parker has more upside. Even if she were to get injured she could have a solid career as a pro like Suzy Favor Hamilton. I don’t see tjat as being a viable option for Touhy.

Both will most likely finish 8th/9th consistently and have their white, hype-fanboys, claim that they're losing because others, read East Africans, are cheating. I can see the seeds for excuses for coming years of mediocre, though to their talents and abilities, performances already being laid.

I am not going to argue over their ability (they are both very good). What I do see is that they are both injury prone at an early age. Each will have some good performances, but neither is a world beater. Neither Tuohy nor Valby are better than Karissa Schweizer or Alicia Monson (one of which is injury prone and the other who has suffered her first major injury). I think both Valby and Tuohy could eventually be better than them but I don't expect much beyond that.

Agreed, until the USA allows the US runners to dope for the untested races like Chicago and others, the US runners will only be relevant at more tested events like the Olympics, where suddenly the ‘best’ are far more human.

Both Valby and Tuohy were better than Monson and Schweizer in ncaa. Reasonable to believe they will also improve as pros.
At current level of 14:52/15:03 they are basically even. I was very impressed with Valby's consistency over the whole ncaa&Olympic cycle.
I would still guess that Touhy will have the better long term pro career.

I hate to say it, but for me, women's running has kind of been ruined. I am not a big fan of the "everyone is doping" theory but honestly, with times like 3:49, 14:00, sub-29, and 2:09, there is NOTHING an American runner can do to be relevant in the coming era.
Remember when Jordan Hassay was trying to break 31:30 minutes in the 10km? She never did. Remember when she tried to break 15:30 in the 5km? She did it! 15:28! That is just "quaint" in the current era.
But getting back to Valby and Touhy... I don't think either of them can run the kind of kind of times we see today; and sadly, the next decade will be full of even more "insane" results. The coming wave of athletes will make everything American women do sort of irrelevant. It reminds me of how it was for American men in the late 1990s.
