running a fast half requires specific training if you want to run a fast one. He defn could be amazing at it just would need to switch up the training from 1500/5k obviously to longer intervals, tempos, etc.
Uh, he ran a 63 and that’s conclusive evidence he is not a 5/10 runner. Like just about every other runner, he does not have the range of Hassan. It really doesn’t matter what he thinks or says.
Ah yes, running a national record for the 10k, in a HM, when you haven't trained for it is definitive proof of someone not being a 10k runner.
That it’s a national record doesn’t mean much, and it was about a minute slower than the AR. Ingebrigtsen is good enough to be compared to the world’s best runners and not just his compatriots. There are probably more than 50 runners in the world that could have matched his splits today.
I still believe he is the greatest 1500/5000m ever and his 63 does not change that opinion.
I wish people claiming that he's gonna break every WR would shut up now.
I agree, however if you sample the random non-running related post on this website, you'll soon realize the average IQ around here is lower than it is in most special education classrooms.

Yes, it means something when he can break the national record without specific training, at the end of the track season and just a day after running a 1500 final. Do you think he can't improve his time by at least a minute if he actually puts some effort into it?

Yeah, I think this definitively shows he’s a tweener at this point. His best distance is 3k.
As a tweener myself (best distance 600m) I can honestly say that this is an awful feeling to realize this, and I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. I feel very bad for Jakob.
He will never win another championship 1500 and will struggle to move up. Brutal
EXACTLY SIR!!!!!!!!!
I want what's best for Jakob, but dude can't even control his breathing in a distance running event at his sweetspot distance which is HM so how is he gonna manage the 10k even??????????????
Unless he be like Fisherdope who takes drugs and magically runs without breathing and sprints to 2 Olympic bronzes, he might never make a living running HM, FM or even 10k!!!!!!!
Why in the world is he struggling splitting 10k in 27:27???? Why???? I just can't understand!!!!!! All the reasons I've seen given are hogwash!!!!!!!! It's definitely not for lack of training because come on this dude is history's AEROBIC GOAT!!!!!!!! Even less accomplished aerobic talents like Sammy Wanjiru, Zersenay Tadesse and Patrick Macau Musyoki and even Kenenisa Bekele were able to split FASTER THAN 27:27 in a HM and/or go on to also simultaneously hold the marathon WR (for Wanjiru and Patrick)!!!!!!!!!!
Kenenisa Bekele never did attempted the HM WR but if he did it's a no-brainer he wouldn't be whining about 27:27 being 'too fast' for a 10k split. Heck if he did it in his prime in 2005-2008, Bekele would surely split 27:00 flat at the minimum and smash the HM WR and run it in 56:59 on bad shoes no less!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kiplimo wouldn't have been the HM WR holder at all!!!!
But Jakob was supposed to be better than Bekele right???????????????????????

Only a minute lol??????????? Josh KERR already at 61:54 sir!!!!!!!!!
Josh KERR finished looking relaxed too, he wasn't about to collapse and gasping for breath!!!!!!

It's so easy to start believing that one is invincible, after winning a few races. This has got to be the worst time of his training year to run a half marathon. Almost all middle distance runners suffer from a deteriorating aerobic base in racing season, with the end of the season, being the absolute worst. For a miler to try to run a half marathon at the end of a racing season, has to be torture.

I agree with that, right now, as of now, we have to cease and desist from all projections about Jakob's future distance potential at longer events. It's becoming way too much of a joke and embarrassment for all of us and him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In a world of mobile phones and anthropogenic RF exposure, human biology is very erratic and unstable to predict with any certainty!!!!! This isn't the year 2005 or 1995 where predictions of athlete potential were still more reliable due to less assault on high performance biology by anthropogenic RF, this is the year 2024 with DOOMED OUTCOMES AND IRREVERSIBLE NERVOUS SYSTEM DAMAGE ON HIGH-PERFORMANCE BIOLOGY!!!!
We can only say with certainty that Jakob is a 5000m great, not even a 1500m one lol!!!!!!!!!
Jakob only has the wares from 5000m to back up any claim that he is a 5000m great!!!!!!!! He has nothing as much to show for in the 1500m!!!!!

Except Jakob is no ordinary miler lol!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! In fact, he isn't even a legit miler or miling GOAT!!!!!!!!!! If he was, he would have 4 more extra gold medals to show for, and those 2 relevant WRs to match!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
In the post-race interview. He comments that the distance was way too long for him.
He should’ve went out in 28 flat, no 27:22. If it’s your first half marathon and you obviously haven’t trained specifically for it, why go out so fast?
Because you dont take it so serious and want to test how it feels like?

Boy was I disappointed for him and stayed up till 3:30 am to watch this and WTF! He looked like he was having an asthma attack. I've never watched him so unprepared for a race. He should never have done this. If he were going to run a half he should have done Valencia in December when he was in the middle of his distance running block. He embarrassed himself and I don't want to hear any more talk of 10 world records. He is a 5k track runner, one of the best in history and he should be happy with that. Now if this was just a bad race, even the greats have them, we remember joshua cheptegei crashing and burning in 2017 world champs cross country champs "" "" only to win in 2019 and break two world records on the track and we remember Letsenbet Gidey collapse and who can forget Cooper Teare . So I don't want to be too hard on Jakob, but like these other athletes especially Cheptegei, Jakob must came back bigger and stronger to erase this horrible performance!
Jakob will come back ready and stronger, as always. That's actually why I love his running, he's not afraid to try different distances, different approaches to racing and he's not afraid of anyone and always tries hard to get the most out of himself. We just got used to him being at the highest level in every race, but at the end of the day, he's human like the rest of us. That's just one more reason to respect him. Kudos to the champion for all he has done and will do in middle distance running, we look forward to him doing the same in long distance running.
To be honest, Jakob made a great decision to run a half marathon this year. And he ran it in the best way, at the same pace as the best half-marathoners. (as long as it lasts). It's very easy for Jakob to adjust his pace to his opportunities on the day and run some sort of result, but that's pointless to me. In fact, it was just a check on how the elite run a half marathon. All of you who think this is the end of Jakob's road running career are seriously mistaken, this is just the beginning, and I personally really liked it (the pre-race interview, the approach to the race, the post-race interview). Jakob may be stubborn, but he is far from stupid. He perceives and understands things very accurately. His love for running, his desire to prove himself, his hard work will always pay off.
I agreed. He actually toned it down quite a bit pre-race as opposed to the interview before the 3k WR. He clearly knows where he's at but he loves challenging himself by doing crazy stuff which is exactly why we like him.
No one has brought up that maybe Jakob is too big, too heavy for the longer distances. He’s a big kid.
Those 130 mile weeks of double thresholds don’t translate to strength if you’re 165lbs.
In 2 years he could be injured, past his prime, destroyed. Nothing in his training or racing showed he could run sub59 but I love his ambition and courage. I used to be like that. Flew off to Breakers Marathon after running a 24:12 8km road without doing any specific marathon work. Stopped at 10 miles.
Not great, but not bad by any means. Keep in mind that he started this half-marathon 36 hours after running a 3:30 1500m i Brussels.
Jakob did a 27:54 in a 10k road race a couple of weeks after turning 19 (in bad conditions) He definitely has more potential in the half-marathon.
Also, he has been toying with Europe's best 10000m runners in the European XC Championships (2021 and 2022.) Absolutely destroyed runners like Kaya, Gressier, Cairess, Kimeli, Crippa, etc.
It definitely shows that a 10k and half are really different for a guy whose best distances are probably 3k/5k.
I’ve never bought that Jakob was actually a “half marathon man”, rather the best 3k/5k talent ever and so good that he can still dominate 1500/10ks. Maybe the 800 is too short for him and the half too long for now
Best 3k/5k ever? Combine his times and he's way behind a few guys.

Keep in mind that Hassan started her marathon 34 hours after winning bronze in the 10k and won gold while Jakob couldn't even run faster than Gidey's half marathon debut.
A 10,000 takes more out of the legs than a 1500 too. When Jakob loses and/or performs poorly, it's always endless excuses from these fanboys

Dude. Jakob never said that he was going to be in contention for a WR. Even his brother Filip was saying that there was a 50% chance he wouldn’t even finish. This was a test to see how well he could run it at the end of a long season. He came up short. He doesn’t think he is invincible.

I don't think so. With the high volume of his base phase, I think he would run a strong half off of his base phase. That's what Kerr did to start his season this year
pretty good and honest post-race interview. said it was way too fast and too long for him, he would not have been able to stay with the group the whole way, neither mentally nor legs-wise. just got the national record for 10 km, then jogged in home in 63. also said it's kind of a way to force himself to rest now.
It's generous to say he jogged home. "Jogging" isn't a pace, it's a feeling and by his own admission, he was broken at 10k. That last 11k was hard work for him
