Duke Coach EXPOSED

College Athletics isn't like it was back when Al Buehler held court at Duke and almost all of the team were walkons, who loved the sport and had fun and some even made the Olympics. It is now a business, much like Duke basketball has been and what you all want, it seems. As a business you are hired to do a job and if you don't the company can release you (unless you work for the government). Complaining about a coach is an escape mechanism for those who either don't have the talent or don't apply their talent. Many programs have coaches that hardly show up or are hands on and are still winning programs, due to the calibre of athlete recruited. You get what you pay for and you pay for what you get.

my biggest problem with this article is Reckert doesn't comment and to be honest I don't blame her. there's no upside. If she gives her account to these accusations all she's doing is stirring the pot and it turns into a back and forth 'he said she said' thing which serves no purpose.

and the allegations revolved around very private and personal incidents. a player with emotional problems, underage drinking with one member going to the hospital. she's not gonna divulge the details of a conversation she and an athlete had in private or produce hospital records to prove what really happened.

Umm ... technically, yes, but not really. The undergrad demographic includes a rather substantial Jewish population, but it's generally quite secular. It's not Liberty or even Notre Dame.

And yes, people drink there, though I haven't seen people cite any sources for the "THEY ALL WENT TO PRACTICE DRUNK!" accusations.

More generally, I think a lot of the conversation in this thread misses what's really going on in youth sports these days. The sports are the gateway into the good school -- scholarship or not. When they get to that school, they might just insist on taking physics or organic chemistry or something the athletics department thinks is too hard or too time-consuming.

These kids suck. I’m glad they didn’t get to run nuttycomb and I’m glad they didn’t get their 5th years.
If you can’t handle your business and party without getting caught after 4 years of college you don’t deserve another chance. NCAA is HARD. They were never going to nationals anyway. Joke squad

Duke will never make it to the same academic rep as Harvard or Stanford if their kids can’t hide a rager from their coaches. That’s directional state school stuff. Or worse, Cornell.

This is what happens when you give a distance running coaching position to a former sprinter. Look up Angela Reckart, she never even ran cross country at the college level and it looks as though she was primarly a 400 meter runner! According to the article the problems the Duke runners had was a "bad attitude." Now, how many distance runners have you coached who had a attitude problem? There is your answer, not that I was perfect.

Also, Angela Reckart was a DIII runner. I doubt that she even ran high school cross country! She was just plain unqualified. Yet someone here gave me a down vote. It is amazing how low some people are on LRC! The only thing I can figure out is that he/she knew or is Angela Reckart!

Dude wise up. Us directional state school kids were masters at hiding parties ... It's why we were at directional state schools.

Certainly there are issues with Reckart's coaching and some of the athlete's lack of accountability. Don't miss the forest for the trees though. Wilbourn is a snake in the weeds and the Duke administration is complicit with his actions, a combination of ill will and negligence.

Jed, female coaches are so low on numbers compared to men that they are simply not put under the same microscope as men are. No experience no problem. It’s sad because it makes the legitimate female coaches look bad. Until they’re under the same level of vetting you will keep seeing them hired over us when they do not deserve it

I am shocked these college students gave quotes. I would never hire Ben for a job. He’d be in HR day one saying someone was mean to him, because they didn’t laugh at his joke.

How does someone show up drunk to practice and not get kicked off the team. The coaches biggest issue was allowing these terrible influences to stay on the team. She does not have a job now because she let the athletes run the show.

With that said, I would never want to coach at a school like Duke if coaches get fired for telling kids who party, you can’t come back for a 5th year. If they had been at Tennessee last year, those runners would have been off the team the next day.

So your complaint was that they took scholarships away, but here you ADMIT that the athletes still would have had their scholarships. The coaches offered them free money without them even having to run. There is nothing to complain about.

It's objectively true that the team would be better off next year without those athletes being bad influences on the team.

These things should never go haywire before the season plays out ...It's up to the AD to tell the team that it's coaches discretion during the season -- but that they may meet him/her at the conclusion season.

Coaching at Duke/an Ivy is different.

As one of the most successful ivy coaches in history used to say, "The problem with you guys is all of you are smart enough to intellectually justify all of your decisions."

I obviously assume you're including Stanford there as well?

But I have always wondered how they get FAR better teams than any of the 9 you mentioned. Is it culture? Their overall quality of recruits is only slightly better yet they outperform; and they get similar amounts of true top-end recruits (think the European 3:38 1500m runner at 18 who's currently at Harvard).
