Not really honestly 2012 was still above this for sure - wire to wire world record, a race so deep that it defied the logic of the time, and as much as I hate to say it, no super shoes
I wouldn't even consider this the best 800 race run by an American. That still goes to Brazier in 2019 - American record, dominant world championship gold
Ah, the racists strike again. Hoppel ran faster against a field better than anything Brazier ever faced.
but look where brazier came from? his story was a testament to a whole race of peoples. beautiful american made story. someone like Brazier could never come from France.
Actually, 4 of 6 people on this thread up to this post are saying multiple medalists are juicing, and you're one of the 2 who thinks only bronze is suspect. His point still stands, but I'm partial to your take, as well.
Fair but I’d assert if you did a poll of Letsrun, probably it would be something like this:
75% think Sedjati is doping
10% think Hoppel is doping
15% think Arop is doping
35% think Wanyonyi is doping. Wanyonyi gets the collateral damage of the Kenyan busts & his coach’s complicated history. Hoppel gets a little US bias, Arop US-based and Western bias. Sedjati being North African, coming out of nowhere and now having his coach investigated would be a high % case.
He runs a 1:41 AR and still can’t get a medal - Jeeezzz, what da ya want!?!?
why does everyone keep saying this was an AR it wasn't
It might depend on how old they are. AR used to mean "American Record" (meaning United States of America). NR is absolutely a better title. But I almost always initially see AR as American Record and then have to translate it to Area Record.

Just some perspective.
I see PB (peanut butter?) and have to remember it's the new acronym these days for PR.

He’ll get a medal. It will take some time for wada to sort out first.
It could be in a matter of weeks if the Algerian admits his guilt if not he could wait for years as the appeals go through the courts.
I don't know how performance bonuses occur with sponsors but Adam Nelson claimed when he was upgraded to gold not winning the gold at the conclusion of the shotput competition cost upwards of a million dollars and he was a shot putter...
If someone is caught ahead of Hoppel, what happens to my draftkings bet I had for him medaling? I guess you still don't get paid, right?
I have no view on who is doping and who isn't... but its clear that shoes/track/Sodium Bicarbonate is making a big difference. Even Arop said he felt it to a large degree. That alone could easily be a second or more, shifting the times back to the 1:42/1:43 range.

They would probably refund it, or face some anger from customers. Don't know if they'd pay it out.
As for the performance jump, I think it's the bicarb honestly. The shoes have been around, and the effect on times didn't happen until this year. Fast tracks are around. Where you can speculate the bicarb part is guys being able to kick off of honest paces in an 800m like we hadn't seen before. Usually that last 200 will be about survival and now you see routine back-to-back sub 13s from 300 out off of 50-51 first laps. Wanyonyi's race was more of a throwback with him hanging on for a 13.0 last 100 from the front. Still, hanging on remarkably well, but we've seen frontrunners do that. But Arop, Hoppel, Attaoui, Tual et al are kicking in 1:41-1:42 flat races in a new way.
