Because Tuohy didn’t want to come out and race her. Tuohy didn’t show up at the BU meet after cross-country last fall either. So there is no story. Valby raced at BU and set the overall Collegiate 5000m record, remember. Yeah, sure, if your point is that Tuohy was at one time in the past, faster than Valby, then, uhh yeah. But that has not been the case for a year now.
And I’ll say it right now for your benefit: whether or not Valby races the 5000m at the Trials has nothing to do with Tuohy. She may want to just concentrate on the 10000m.
My point is, every time they've been in the same 5000m race thus far in their careers, Tuohy won. I also specifically said no one is ducking anyone else. It's quite clear that neither athlete is considering the other in her decision making. I can't wait to see what Valby can do at the trials in her first race as a pro, and any normal fan is excited to see them both develop over the next few years. I currently have low expectations for Tuohy's performance if she races at the trials. I expect Valby to be faster if they are in the same race. Hopefully, Tuohy takes a step up and we can see another great race between the two of them at the forefront of US Distance running.
