What is the most stupid running advice you've ever heard?🤣(It can be funny)

A rather successful NAIA coach, who oddly wasn't a fan of the medical field, advised one of his athletes who has recently suffered a partial quad tear that "You don't need surgery. Go to my chiropractor and he will deal with it. keep massaging that bump and don't forget your acupuncture appointment." The athlete eventually had surgery and later transferred.....

This one I don't get. Doesn't everyone's breathing naturally fall in line with cadence? I couldn't imagine not doing this, although I don't force it at all.

Yeah, I just breath when I need to. This is not something you think about. I'm not thinking "OMG, left leg is up, I'll exhale...now right leg is coming up... I think I might need to suck in some air..."

It does now, but that wasn't natural and for a lot of people especially when their breathing gets heavy they get out of sync. When I first started running my breath would often get super short, choppy and inconsistent and I'd end up with horrible side cramps. Had to intentionally relax slow down my breathing and count my breaths to line up with my steps and the side cramps would go away within a few minutes.

Not sure if some people never really had to deal with this, but I also had asthma as a kid and even now there are times it can be super tough to take a deep breath, so I have to be intentional about my breathing on occasion.

I see it all the time in kids that are new to running and honestly, I'm pretty doubtful about this being a natural skill.

I actually spent a year doing nothing but Maffetone pace running while trying to get over some chronic injuries and it worked for that. I never tried to race off it though.

this is like the ol "second wind" people would talk about. NO you didnt get a second wind, you ran too fast at the start, then slowed down, the HR came back down to a reasonable level, and you puttered on at the correct pace.

I was going to put this as well. My idiot MIL told me if I kept running while pregnant I would cause a miscarriage. I was also told by many old ladies my uterus would fall out if I ran.

And you don't think getting kids to focus on their breathing and stride and other basics helps them do better? Also, for what it's worth, it wasn't my heart rate that was the issue, it was short choppy breaths where I wasn't getting enough oxygen. By relaxing and steadying my breathing I was able to speed up (sometimes significantly: ~7ish pace down to 6:15/mile) which felt pretty good as a new runner.

Not saying this would be great advice for Kipchoge or Bekele or anything, but for younger runners who may have a little panic stretch in big meet it can be helpful.

Funnily enough this is actually true, your heart has about 2 billion beats in it. BUT, exercise makes you more fit and therefore reduces your resting heart rate, so in the end you save more beats that you lose by running

I think there may be some benefit to training underused muscle groups, but that is not how it should be done
