Good for her. Stanford Med is extremely selective. One of the hardest to get into in the country. Given her pedigree, I'm sure she's very bright.
Like most med schools, it is much harder to get in if you're white or Asian. In medicine being a female doesn't help at all. A majority of med students are female.
The AAMC publishes data from all schools nationwide documenting what scores and grades you need for each school(breaks it down by race too). Stanford is ridiculously competitive.
It's hard to stand out from the crowd for the selection committee. No question her history as a former pro got the committee's attention.
I agree. But, I think all the high profile work she has done to try to create a healthier environment for girls and women in sports is what tipped the balance in her favor.
It is sad that so many people on this message board are tearing her down and posting inaccurate information.

Women have no advantage when applying to medical school. You can say that they do, but they don't. If you're not referring to medical school, do you honestly believe that women have privilege over men?

With humans, the concept of inheriting IQ should also be obvious but we want to act like everyone is a blank slate which isn't true. The reality is IQ is highly inheritable for adults - way over 50% and some think close to 80%. If her parents are smart, she's likely smart.

What's "crazy" about observing that Mary Cain has a pattern of lack of work ethic? Mary Cain is a just another social media influencer these days who just jumps from thing to thing to get likes and followers. I'll bet you that Mary Cain doesn't stick with the medicine thing for more than a year before making it quietly disappear, like her triathlon career, for the next thing to get more likes. Loser has to go visit a doctor at a hospital without health insurance.

like all things human, it's a big, complicated mix of genetics, culture, family traditions, social expectations, nature, nurture, admissions biases like legacy admits....
the danger is trying to narrow any of this down to one thing.

parents weren't real smart sending her off to the creep at 17. One hour of research and they would see that's a recipe for disaster.

Fact: Mary Cain's professional triathlon career lasted only 1 sprint race and she has never done any more in the years since because she wasn't the best and didn't put any effort into learning how to bike. Same for her attempted comeback at running when she only did 1 track meet and then quit again because she didn't even put effort into training like others.
