What kind of scholarship do top NCAA runners come in on?

You keep mentioning only track and field. Sure, there are pure sprint/field schools that have won national titles like that. It is a valid strategy for winning only track and field. I'm not debating that it works. You have NAU types on the other end of that coin solely focused on XC which I also mentioned. I went to 2 schools, both with the same strategy for a complete program XC and T&F and worked for both of them. Two things can be true simultaneously.

Why do coaches complain about how much money they have to pay to such slow runners? Why not call the incompetent coaches out for not doing more recruiting rather than just signing the 1st kid who shows up? Most of you are so out of touch and you hate when the real people tell you what schools are actually paying. The 1:47 guy has not complained. But when we have real life people willing to lay out the recruiting process, it shouldn't upset the morons when it contradicts their world view.

How many top 25 teams at indoor nationals were distance schools?

How long ago do you think that was a decade ago? I remember guys were getting decent scholarships going sub 4:20 as a junior back then. I know today it's bad, 4:15 guys are probably getting ignored. I know it was getting hard when the top hs kid in the state right now who is 1 second off the all time mile state record is going to a pretty bad school in a bad conference. I know if it was decade ago with that mile time he'd be going to any power 5 school. Kind of nuts a 4:05 kid is not a spectacle anymore. Gary Martin running that sub 4 solo a decade ago would've been considered a forever legendary performance. That Verzbicas sub 4 is still something a lot of people will remember.

Was your 1:47 guy in that indoor final?

The top 50 recruits seem to have little trouble finding homes. At the top end the coaches seem to do pretty well at recruiting.

In many cases a top recruit may prefer to pay some school cost to attend a 'tradition rich' school like Oregon, UW, Colorado, Notre Dame, Villanova etc. rather than taking more money at UMass Lowell, or SUNY Binghamton.

I don't know where you find all these lazy coaches. The bad programs are generally just underfunded with 0 scholarships, so they are stuck with walk ons.

It's percentage of full advertised cost of attending the university, room and board, and books. And there's even like a couple thousand extra baked into it for other expenses. But if you have a partial, it's applied to the tuition in most cases. This is because it's usually cheaper to find some rental that is cheaper than the dorm 'room and board' cost. If you have a full and live off campus in a cheaper place, you get to pocket the extra money.

I think a better way of saying a lot of posts in this thread is that with top tier times, you can get a full ride. It helps to have really good grades.

That being said, the school you want to go to may not have a full available for you based off of who they have on their team, allotment, and philosophy.

1:47 would get a full at pretty much every school that cares about mid distance running and has the scholarship available.

Another story time from my experience. I was recruited by a school in DC (let’s call them Georgetown). They said for my signing class there was not any money available, they would help with with the application cost and see if i could get need based aid. I could not afford Georgetown. I picked a different school. I think they signed two walk on’s that year. The next, they signed some big time studs.

Iowa State is one of the top middle schools in the NCAA. It was between them and Penn State this year. ISU offered the kid a walk-on spot. I guess that destroys your point.

He finished 4th at nationals but not in the open 800. Pretty good for a freshmen. The 800 meter champion is only on a 50% schoalrship though.

A kid in my conference was one of the sub 4 guys last seasons. He got 33%.

1:47 is great but maybe Iowa state didn’t have the money for the kid at the time. Full program, might have to increase the shot put thrower so he doesn’t go into the portal. They also had a really good XC team, does this kid run 10k on grass?

Did they run this at the end of their senior year? Usually kids are recruited off Junior times.

If a 1:47 kid can’t get a decent scholarship they are super unfortunate or…. A strange dude that they don’t really want on the team

47 as a junior and finished 2nd at nationals. Great kid. Everyone loves him. 35 ACT. Coaches assumed that he would get huge academic scholarships. He is at an elite academic school.

You are correct that schools don't have money just laying around. But you said the opposite in your other post. 12.6 scholarships don't go far when you count sprints, throws, jumps, multis, mid D, distance etc. Most on this board forget all of those other groups.

A sub 4:10 miler with good grades will get offers from multiple schools.

The other side of this coin, which is being talked about a bit, is getting a very significant academic scholarship. I graduated high school with a 35 ACT, 4.0. Not fast enough to cut it at D1 level, but I received full tuition at a number of P5 Division 1 schools, purely based on my test taking ability. If I had been fast enough to compete for them, 10% scholarship would have easily been a full ride. There is so much more money on the academic than the athletic side of things. Working on taking standardized tests pays off a lot more than getting marginally better at running.

In the end, I went to a DIII school on a full ride for academics (tuition + room and board). Got to live the dream of a college runner while competing at the highest level I can compete at, and it came true because I was good at school, not running.

I don't know who Ivy is but I know who the kid is. Are any of you fans? You don't know who ran 47/1:47 last season and finished 4th in the NCAA this season? There is only one guy meeting those criteria. He has talked about his recruiting journey publicly. I really think that most of you are a bunch of former D3 distance guys whorl don't know what goes on.
