We’re in an olympic year when every pro is dismissing indoor worlds and world cross to peak in August…and people are disappointed about an indoor season opener time trial in January not featuring the matchup they want? Let it go people. This is basically preseason football.
If I went to the Chiefs vs Lions season opener and they just took turns with the Chiefs offense vs Chiefs defense and then the Lions offense vs the Lions defense I would be pissed too.
I don't think anyone fails to understand what OAC is doing and why. It makes total sense to work with meet management and influence the split in the field to keep all your team together in an "even" split.
A true even split would have OAC guys in both races, and would not look like a BTC sound running meet in one heat and a traditional fast heat at BU in another. The uproar is related to the 3 most visible members of OAC have spent 110+ podcast episodes over the last few years calling out BTC for not racing or just time trialing outside of championship meets, or just saying avoiding competition and racing is bad for the sport. Then their coach does exactly this. It's hypocritical, it isn't wrong, and it is certainly in their best interests.
It’s tough because I see both sides of the argument here. I think the part that no one is really talking about is the demand emotionally. Having someone you want to beat and have a (kinda one sided) rivalry with in your season opener can be pretty emotionally draining. If you get absolutely waxed in the race you have to hear everyone talk about that. If you destroy your competition people will hype up that race and sometimes expect more of you the next time. I think this is essentially what Josh was saying that Mackey thought was draining about doing media. It’s hard to ply that tennis match in your head.
Like I said, they aren't wrong for setting up the race they want, but either Ollie should talk crap about his teammates for being scared or just admit that they're huge hypocrites.
It was confirmed on the coffee club podcast today that they did request their own heat. Ollie also alluded to Nuguse going for the 5km WR. Incredibly lame and #badforthesport that Kincaid and Nur weren’t included in the heat if Nuguse is in fact going for the WR. Go to 58:50 in the vid to listen.

Ollie called them out in the only way he could without actually criticizing his team, he can call out other teams but not allowed to speak negatively about his own brand. Morgan toed the company line and said they "chose" to be in the second heat so they could control the pace and just focus on getting the world standard, then Ollie ruined it and said Yared was going for the WR. Basically, we want a polite heat where everyone knows their place and no one is in Joe or Yared's way.
Such garbage for an american to chase a record in a different heat at the same meet from the american record holder and the current national champ. Chump move in my opinion.
Can someone explain to me why professional athletes cannot go after the 13:05 standard because other people are in their race? I don't think the obvious "answers" stand up to much scrutiny.
Seems like they only want to pursue it in a controlled environment, just surrounded by teammates. Kind of like a... time trial. You know, the thing they have consistently ripped on BTC for doing in their podcast.

This is significantly worse than what BTC did. BTC in fact just made their own races from scratch, and never barred anyone else from joining. This was mostly during the pandemic when there were no other races to do.
OAC is instead hijacking an existing meet and carving out their own protected heat that they aren't letting other athletes enter. Really slimy if you ask me. Why not just rent out BU on a Wednesday night or something? Why even be involved with this meet at all?

I don’t think it’s “good for the sport” per se, but limiting the field to inferior athletes is pretty standard practice for world record attempts. Why give someone else a free ride? OAC races enough that I don’t really care about this, in the same way I didn’t care about Cheptegei facing lesser athletes in his 12:35, and won’t care if/when Jakob blocks Yared from his mile record attempt.

They are literally controlling the heat entries to let in inferior athletes, not limit them.
Unclear if it was requested or the meet just did it anyway. Do you think anyone likes the prospect of Woody dogging your heels for 22 laps, falling back a little, and then unleash a 26-second lap to beat you? Probably not, for guys just trying to hit the standard at the front like Klecker.
This. I am tired of seeing the same story play out with these guys – Klecker doing the work with Woody hanging on the whole time until he drops the hammer on Joe at the end. I am more excited to see Nuguse and Klecker do their own thing without having Woody sit and wait the whole race.

Read my post again. “Limiting the field to inferior athletes,” i.e. preventing better athletes from racing. I’m aware of what they’re doing. People don’t have to like it but this is typically how world record attempts go.
ON has their own heat and refuses to let woody and nur run in the same heat as klecker and nuguse.
OAC themselves confirmed as much as what I shared but that didn't stop fanboys from downvoting, obfuscating the obvious dynamics of this race and when confirmed offering excuses and justifications for it.
In typical letsrun fashion, american clubs get built up by as bastion of purity and vanguards of the sport when as always they are purely motivated by selfish pursuit to run fast as possible, chase medals and monopolize opportunities for themselves. it's why this sport will never be popular.
its okay OAC fanboys, its time admit they are no different than their predecessors.

Ah, we got people on the OAC payroll in here now I see.

Is this sarcasm? What else is there as a professional but to run as fast as possible and chase medals? What would you have them do instead lol.

Ya’ll are so salty, slow and pathetic here. This gives the impression coffee club audience members are miserable? Who is cringey enough to use “goodforthesport”? Who’s are all these OAC haters and woody fanboys? Who are all these slow chumps. I’m ashamed to call myself a distance running fan because ya’ll are such p*ssy’s and crybaby’s over nothing that matters. “Oh noooo they’re not racing each other ohhhh shucks!! #this #that #imash*tmypants”. Get a grip, ya’ll are so embarrassing…and yes, unless if you can run sub 28 in a 10k as of now, you are slower than me. Go cry and be pathetic. Such losers, who cares? These pros don’t. Tell olli to focus on his mental health instead of criticizing his teammates for doing their own thing…you know maybe if he focused on himself more, it would probably improve for his own well being instead of gossiping on some decent podcast that is attracting temper tantrum adults (aka Karen’s). He’s a medal threat but this type of attitude adds up over time. Ohhh nooo #badforthesport womp womp. Go read a book karens.
