Sifan Hassan is the women's distance GOAT

I predict she will limit herself to two events but it will be the 1500 and marathon. She will win bronze medals in both (which would admittedly be very impressive) and we’ll continue this debate.

It’s not unreasonable to factor in longevity and range in a GOAT status application, either.

Imagine a 1:43 800m runner placing third at 1500m worlds and second at 5000m that’s impressive right ? (and I’m not even talking about the 10 000m fall or the bad strategies.)

Now imagine that same 1:43 runner winning the Boston marathon in 2:01 just 6 weeks later.

The fact that she was able to fight with Kipyegon, the GOAT middle distance runner, as a marathon runner, between two major marathon wins in less than 6 months is just crazy.

Most marathon runners don’t even run two marathons in 6 months, let alone winning both and getting a few medals at worlds on the track in between.

That’s right. The problem is when Hassan fans prioritize range over everything else. If we go by the 4 factors we named, Dibaba comes out on top overall.

I agree with this. My only point was using championship losses as the only factor, didn’t make sense. But again, a few more gold medals for Hassan would make a stronger case for her.

Jackson might be #2, but FloJo is unquestionably the #1. Not to mention the drop in times that FloJo would have on a new trampoline track surface.

Her times were run in 1988–that’s now 35 years ago!!!

Even if someone betters her times, she could still be the GOAT.

What I like about Hassan is the balls she shows: road AND track, tripling, whatever distance, historic performances at disparate distances within a single season, etc.

I love heart, and she has it—just like the Citizen Runner. The best!

However, if Assefa destroys a bunch of other records, I will have to reconsider. Never liked Dibaba too much.

I doubt that Sifan can beat that Ethiopian girl in the marathon.

All Assefa needs to do is to take it out like her life depends on her. Her finish(ing) is quite epic.

Also, should Sifan double by doing the t0k, since it comes first, she'd have tired legs for the marathon and that would be an added encumbrance.

Sifan loves to go all the way. Should she double, by doing the 1500m, she'd be in for a treat because it's now official that she can't beat FAith.

So, it's not a given that Sifan would win a championship marathon race and she most likely wouldn't win the 1500m.

Her best bet is to just run the marathon.

Hassan has a fantastic record from 1500m to marathon. And she has expressed that range of talent this year.

In order for Sifan Hassan to earn 1500m bronze, she has to race off the pace, 4th, 5th or 6th place with 300m to go. Can she earn bronze doing that? Yes. I miss Sifan Hassan emptying the tank in 1500m races from 1200m to 1300m. Again, the only two races Sifan Hassan has any chance of gold are 10000m & Marathon.

10000m and marathon would be the best combo--lot of heats in the 1500m plus Kipyegon to deal with--guys like Shorter and Viren did the 10000 and the marathon (Viren did the 5000, 10000 and marathon in Montreal) when the 10000m had heats....

Hassan is the best woman's distance runner ever in my book because she's done things no one else has even tried and succeeded! getting the triple, the 15 10 double, going from the track to marathons and then back to the track with great success... Winning a marathon and then medaling at the 1500 in a few months...

I mean yeah obviously if you're talking about just one distance you can kind of argue who is the best ever.... but this is all in the eye of the observer so I think you're all a bunch of bozos....

I agree mostly. Faith K will win 1500m. G Tsegay will battle Faith K for 5000m gold. I say S Hassan should race 10000m, because Sifan Hassan's best chance of victory is 10000m. Once she races 10000m, S Hassan may or may not recover for Marathon. As I stated, for some reason, Olympic Marathon bronze goes to a 2:22:30 or slower women. Even on tired legs, Sifan Hassan should be able race race 2:22:30 or faster.

PS. BTW, OFC, Hassan will lose 1500 if she tries, will lose 5000 if she tries (to 2 women), and will lose 10,000 to Tsegay if she tries.

Such BS. If you are evaluating best “distance runner” of all time, then range is paramount. Hassan’s 1500 in Doha, her 10000 in Tokyo and her win today are all you need to judge her to be the Goat. Simply counting medals and records and wins and losses is for the simple minded.

Yes, the 10,000-marathon double would undoubtedly be the most logical but that’s not the basis of her decision. She prefers to do the extreme and the unprecedented. As you say, the 10,000-marathon double has already been done and in a tougher format. A 1500-marathon double would be unique and a much greater challenge, and that’s what she’s after.
