No but “most successful” was in the thread title and arguably there can only be one answer to that and I was shooting down that notion unless people are just going to argue about 3 or 4 names, for example.
Phil Knight is a questionable choice, as the very essence and foundation of Nike is based upon running and running shoes.
Nike obviously later became huge and Mr. Knight even more successful because of their involvement in other non-running ventures (particularly sponsorship of a certain basketball player).
Take away any association with running and the sale of shoes to runners and its likely Nike never gets off the ground and does not exist.
Thus the career of Knight is not one that is 'outside of running'.
Nike and Knight are still involved and associated with running.

I guess the definiton of "non-running" is up for debate. I interpret that to mean not being a professional runner/becoming famous as a runner, which would keep Phil Knight in the conversation as he built up Nike using his business connections rather than purely from running. Who would you say is the most successful totally outside of the running sphere of influence?
I hate to mention them because of where they ended up but OJ Simpson (USC) and Bill Cosby (Temple) were both highly successful in entertainment before their falls from grace.
Phil Knight ran for the University of Oregon varsity track team under Bowerman in the late 50's, then he founded Blue Ribbon Sports which became Nike :)

Sooo many PhDs, doctors, engineers, teachers, business people… you name it. Don’t confuse fame and wealth with success.
Haven't read past the OP, so this might have been brought up already, but Jimmy Carter did pretty well for himself after his time with cross country at the Naval Academy.
