Not being mean. I was responding to the ridiculous calls for a black page and the even more ridiculous comparison between ultra running and true sports. Ultra running is as niche as one can get. What percentage of people do it, 0.1%? To boast about how much better someone is at ultra running than their competitors is moronic.
What percentage of people do pole vaulting?
I've never even met someone who has done it. I know a bunch of people who have run ultras.
The difference is the pole vault is the established premiere event for implement-assisted jumping over a bar. The best athletes of that kind do it. The equivalent to ultra running would be if a small group of mediocre pole vaulters who have no chance of ever qualifying for the Olympics decide to create some new type of jump competition, probably involving a trampoline, and then cultivate a fan base who brags about how great they are, and how their champion is more dominant in their “sport” than Mondo Duplantis.

You forgot the part where in order to even get into the biggest competitions you have to qualify by finishing on the podium of other big events (golden tickets) that draw hundreds to thousands of participants because of the incentive, or wait years in the lottery system and hope but probably never get a draw.
but that hurts your narrative that these races aren’t competitive doesn’t it?
Ultra running is not a sport. It’s just an extreme activity for a tiny number of mediocre hobby joggers who aren’t good enough to hack it in standard distances but still crave attention.
"extreme activity" is the perfect name for Ultrarunning. Courtney would probably beat most everyone on Survivor or Fear Factor.
walmsley's pr's are only 1:02/2:15. 6th place male @ utmb was mathieu blanchard. he also ran states. for "speed work", he ran london this spring in 2:23. i'm sure you times are in that range. something tells me your punk ass couldn't break 3 in the thon or 32 10k.
It’s a different sport, although I do agree the talent pool isn’t as big. Stop being bitter. You could extend this all the way down to 100m and say the same for distance runners
Courtney wins by a much larger margin than Kipyegon or Crouser. That is a fact no matter how you spin it.
Strength of competition matters when assessing the magnitude of an accomplishment. Courtney has had an amazing summer, but I can’t believe there are any serious fans of running who would think that what Kipyegon has done in the summer of 2023 is not more impressive. Certainly as impressive…..Three world records, undefeated, double wc gold, dominated other all-time greats in the sport like Hassan. C’mon…..
Courtney has run faster than a ton of guys this year. Look at the guys she's higher than on the WS100 all-time list: Kilian, Jurek, Mike Morton, Hayden Hawks, Max King, Francois Dhaene, Ludovic Pommeret. A lot of legendary trail men and a number of guys fast on the track/road (sub-4, 6th place at Olympic Trials, etc.).
You guys might be the densest trolls Ive ever met. You really can’t get passed the leg speed comparisons can you? Ultras are not about leg speed. Most quality runners can run at their pace. But they sure as hell can’t run their pace for 20+ hours over multiple mountain passes and technical terrain. They can’t work through stomach issues and pains in muscles you didn’t know existed. Blistered feet that make marathon nipple chaffing look like a paper cut. It takes a different type of talent and engine that you guys clearly can’t comprehend. Get bent and stay out of these threads.

Walmsley's half PR is 1:04. Not saying he's not impressive and ultras aren't a different skillset, but there a tons of guys who can run that, who nobody knows about. They're all great athletes, but it's hard to compare with other sports that draw elite participants from around the world. The sport just isn't there yet. It's an intentionally exclusive, niche sport for a certain segment of the population. Until it overcomes that, people can always look down on it.
How many of those runners can come within 5 minutes of the Olympic marathon standard?
How many shot putters can come within 20cm of the Olympic high jump standard?
Let's be honest - steeplechase runners are just people who can't compete at the 5000m. Triple jumpers are failed long jumpers. 400m hurdlers are just people without the leg speed to run the flat 400.
Max Verstappen gets beat all the time. That's an awful take. Crouser is the best right now as is Mondo, but they are not better than the second best person by a wider margin. You literally cannot name the next closest competitor to Dewalter.
Adam Peaty before he got injured
He's great but no way. The clear comparison to Dauwalter, though, is GOAT katie ledecky.
There was a perfect example in the actual race this year, 2:12 marathoner Duncan Perrillat went off the front early, actually had a decent gap and was leading through 20k. He dropped at 50k having blown up on the first big climb. So yeah, it takes more than just marathon speed to be good at ultras, it takes serious strength and technical running skill, put some respect on Walmsley, Miller & Dauwalter. As well as everyone else who finished inside 30 hours, because I guarentee not a single person commenting could finish UTMB inside 30.

That’s funny. SML has the fastest flat 400 time of any woman in the world this year, and Rai had the fastest split on the US 4x400 relay team that won the gold.
You ultra runners are hilariously desperate to make your extreme hobby jogging activity seem legitimate and on par with true what real athletes do. It’s not!
I will grant you that it takes serious mental fortitude and desperation for attention to run an ultra. But that doesn’t make an ultra participant a high quality runner on the level of Kipyegon or Jakob, nor on the same level as star athletes in popular sports.

can you go through each sport for us and rank them all by the quality of their star athletes?

Says the guy who is hilariously desperate to gatekeep what qualifies as a runner and just called distance runners the “real athletes”
can you go through each sport for us and rank them all by the quality of their star athletes?
Top level would include but not be limited to track, soccer, tennis, swimming, gymnastics, and basketball. Ultra is not a real sport and therefore would not appear on the list.
