Benched 240 last night for the first time! Honestly felt easy. That was after running 1.5 mile warmup at around 7:40 pace. Moving to 245 next week and 250 the week after.
95% of guys at the gym that can put up at least 250, are under 40, and aren't overweight will be able to run a single 7 minute mile even if they don't much cardio.
The fact is neither of these are hard to obtain so you have to increase at least one to make it semi impressive. I think 250 and a sub 6 mile will knock down this number from 95% to probably 15%. Sub 5 and 250 you are looking at 1% most likely.

So what is that 1% as a portion of the overall population? I think you're wrong about most being able to run sub 7 too. 7 minute is of course very slow for a runner, but most of the guys lifting 250+ are on the bigger side, most of them can definitely not run sub 7 with no prior training. With that said, I think that running a sub 7 mile is a much much easier task than lifting 250lbs, just the gym bros is the wrong demographic to put it to the test
As others have pointed out it depends a lot on size / weight. When I weighed 150 a sub 7 minite mile was a cakewalk even at age 41. I couldn’t bemch 250. Now at 47 and 175 pounds the 7 minute mile still isn’t that hard but I can fairly easily bench 250 for a couple of reps.
To me the equivalent of benching 250 wouod be more like a sub 6 mile or even sub 5:45 for a averaged weight person. lighter folks would struggle a lot more with the bench and heavier folks the run.
As also stated this is a pretty weak thing to be auper proud of. Run a sub 17 5K and bench 250 and I am impressed or run a sub 20 minute 5k and bench over 300 and I alao impreases, just don’t make a youtube channel about it.
7 min mile is way way way easier for the vast majority of the population, even people with larger builds. Given equal effort to achieve both unless health issues are a factor I struggle to believe anyone will have an easier time with the bench without being a massive outlier in terms of build / starting strength
I know runners have an aversion to gym-goers, but I promise you the majority of >250 bench/non-overweight/<40yo guys at the gym can run a single mile sub 7. Im not sure what the standard is where that no longer becomes true (maybe ~6:30?, definitely not sub 6), but sub 7 is a trivial achievement compared to 250 bench, especially for someone that already has any type of baseline fitness (even if that only includes lifting and walking).
I actually think you could take a completed non-runner that has a (true) max of ~225lbs on bench, and I bet you could get them to run <7:00 faster than you can get them to bench 250 (if they can’t just run the mile already on the first try)

Reread my criteria. That's why I specified "not overweight".
A lot of Bigger lifters who can do well over 250 will probably be overweight as they carry more fat in general. Which is fine, their goal is probably to bulk and lift very heavy that's why I excluded them. Very few bigger guys are body builder level with low body fat but still being huge. So yes, I think that 95% of people fitting my criteria can run a single 7 minute mile. It might be hard for some of them, but they can do it.
I agree, unless you are obese I think most people that aren't old can train and run a 7 minute mile in less than 6 months. It will take longer for someone to hit 250 especially if they are very skinny.
People here have no clue about the "average" adult. Even if we're looking at young, healthy men, the average person of those characteristics is still massively out of shape. I'm at work right now surrounded by 4 young guys (25-32 years old) and not one of them could run a 7 minute mile OR bench 250. Both of those things take a lot of training and dedication.
Also, I am proud of this feet. Sorry you guys haven't done anything recently to feel proud of, but this is a big deal for me. So back off.
7 minute mile quite a bit easier than 250. Not sure about a sub 5 minute mile being the equivalent of 250 (especially for an older dude). But maybe sub 5:30 and 250.
Seven minute mile is easier than bench pressing 250 lbs. for men under 150 lbs. Seven minute mile is extremely challenging for men over 225 lbs. In U.S., aren't there more men over 225 lbs, than adult males under 150 pounds?

Agree. That's why this type of challenge, which requires both strong cardio strength and strong upper body muscle strength, are interesting to talk about. You have to have a certain body type to do it, as the skinnies won't be able to bench 250 and the biggies won't be able to run sub 6/7.
