Haha, they were interviewed by a dude smoking a cigar and wearing a suit for a small little write-up in a newspaper that people would read the next day. I feel they might act different if they grew up and competed in the twitter era.
It was a better era back then. People were humble and broke. It was great for the popularity of the sport. I'm sure Ryun would have frowned upon an NIL deal and spurned all views on Instagram.

I'm a Jakob fan, as much as anyone. But if you're knowingly going to choose an event you admit isn't your best, and you're still going to trash talk, and then on top of that make excuses when you lose, that deserves some trash talking back.
It's a sign of immaturity, as far as I'm concerned to focus on an event you know isn't what you're best suited for. Didn't he say he's probably best suited for the half marathon? Then why isn't he running it? Why focus on 1500-5000m? Why not 5K to HM? Some things we have to learn the hard way.
Immaturity.
Why talk trash when you win and make excuses when you lose?
Immaturity.
I should know, I had my share of it at 22.
Somehow you are still immature with your lack of comprehension. Cite when Jakob either trash talked or made excuses.
Ten memes is probably overkill but the knight/arrow one is pretty funny, it's wild that the two who beat him are part of the same club, never mind country. The fact the target still won a world title in the 5k follow both, uh, arrowings, takes some sting out of it I suppose.

I'm a fan of J.I. And I'll admit he didn't outright trash talk. But I would have liked to see him say, "Great race by Kerr," or say nothing at all, after being beaten. I also, would like to see him run the event he claims he's most suited for, rather than imply he lost because it's not his best even. But he "IS, the best," he "just had an off day." Which is it? Are you best at this event and had an off day, not best at it, and are better at some event you don't run (10K? HM?).
Why would he claim the half marathon is the event he's most suited for but doesn't run it. Is that true, or just mind games? If it is true, why doesn't he run it? That would be crazy to not run his "best event."
Would Usain Bolt choose the mile or marathon, lose, then say, "But the 100 is my best event! I'm best at the 100!" No, he wouldn't. People would says that's either BS or stupid. But J Ing can say it and we accept it? Uh...no.
Back when athletes did not talk trash, track was 100x bigger than it is today. Everybody knew Bannister and Landy and Ryun, without any trolling.
Not that I really care about what Kerr does, but I do reject the idea that trah talking is either an inevitable or even useful part of athletics.
The explosion in popularity of football and basketball (in the US) and soccer (worldwide) are some of the biggest reasons why track's popularity has declined. Those sports have splashy personalities, rivalries, and hardcore fans, which leads to trash talking. This all generates more excitement for the sport, which is what track misses. Track can try and stay a "classy" sport for as long as officials and fans want, but ultimately it's going to lose out to sports with more exciting personalities.
Hey, it happens. You lose once in a while (Kerr certainly has). Josh is a great runner. As good as Jakob? No, but still truly great. They will meet again.
As for memes; is there an adult out there who cares about them?
Words destroy memes. That's why I appreciate Jakob. He has rare ability to define with a handful of memorable words.
Emojis suck also. I follow athletes on Instagram but am amazed at the weak reliance on emojis. It screams that you can't express yourself.
I dont get it. Kerr is a hero for calling out someone he beat with a bunch of memes, while Jakob, who has never called out anyone is the one who gets hate for being petty.
Josh can talk all the sh*t he can, in the big picture Jakob has as many golds as he has and more total medals at this world championship. He beat Jakob for the first time ever, but lets see if he consistently beats him now or will this one race be the highlight of his track career.
YOU MISSED THE POINT
Jacob is a cocky SOB that feels like he can’t be beat. Josh proved him wrong. That is the whole point. If Jacob never loses again, Josh still proved him wrong. It is not a matter of who is the better athlete or who has the better career. Josh proved him wrong.
Imagine thinking you cant be beat if you are in great shape, after losing only one race since the last WC. What a crime against humanity. He should rather pee himself every night as he dreams that he is beaten. Everyone knows that champions should have no self confidence, and expect to be beat every time they compete.
Jonathan Gault has the highlights from an entertaining pre-race press conference for the Weltklasse Zurich featuring a bunch of newly-crowned world champions.
can someone provide evidence of Jakob talking trash on others and explicitly saying he is superior to everyone else? And I don't mean poorly translated interviews taken out of context. The amount of hate he gets is completely undeserved.
