whittaker beat the NCAA mile champion at Mt. Sac by nearly 1 second. She's probably in 4:05 shape or faster, she just hasn't run it recently. She destroys Tanaka every time they race each other and Tanaka has run 4:09.

Smart by Stanford to keep her hidden, Tuohy won't be expecting it. Tuohy would need to run a 62 second 1st lap to beat Whittaker in a 1500. She won't outkick whittaker.

Not only has Whitaker not run a 4:05 recently, she hasn’t run it ever. Isn’t her PR around 4:12 or so? There’s several runners in the NCAA that are faster than that right now, including Tuohy who ran a 4:24 mile indoors earlier this year. I would say all of the top contenders will be well prepared by their coaches and expecting any number of possibilities in the championship race.

Whittaker was a little burned out from running 800's and wanted a break from the 800. Simple as that. That's not a guess. That comes from Whittaker herself.

Whittaker will be back to the 800 for USA's.

That's the reason why Willis ran the 1500 and Whittaker ran the 800 at PAC-12, because they knew they were going to run the opposite events at Regionals/Nationals.

You think that Tuohy has no clue that Whittaker recently outkicked the national indoor mile champ? Give me a break!

They don't see her workouts. Whittaker hasn't run a 1500 since that race more than a month ago. There is no way for Tuohy to know if Whittaker is in 4:12 shape, 4:07 shape, or 4:02 shape because Whittaker hasn't shown her cards.

Tuohy's last lap in her 4:08 was a 67. Whittaker finished her 4:12 with a 62 last 400 going 32 then 30 last 200.

My opinion is 48/71/71/62 won't get it done. Make those 71s into 68s and maybe. Unless Tuohy is way off the race will be sub 3:05 at 1100, and not 3:10. But, maybe Whitaker can handle that. We shall likely see.

Do folks realize Touhy's 200 m splits in the 4:08 were pretty much 32.5/32.5/ 32.5/32.5/33.75/33.75/33.75 and 16.75 or so for last 100? Almost like run 2:10 for 800 and see how that feels but downshift cuz there is a 5000 coming up in 30 minutes.

Do you think she intentionally let up and just didn't close the last lap because of the upcoming 5k?

In a way you get this right, the issue though is there are probably 10 athletes in the field capable of 4:10 2:04 61 all having good years making many prs and holding cards. Big prs happen this time of year, remember when Tuohy ran 4:33 in hs that was a 7sec pr., Wiley's hs 4:26 a 12 second pr. Just last winter Degenero as last qualifier pr'd to win indoor mile out of nowhere.

Whittaker happens to be the fastest, but may need an 8 sec pr to win.

Touhy's only advantage in this race is strength and the best pr that's real, not based on potential. Back to old school Touhy, she takes it out in 2:08 thru 800 and everyone hangs on for dear life. Whoever wins will have to earn it and do something very special.

To me, it looks like Tuohy tried to hang on after Koko passed her and keep the gap close, but didn't have a response the last 150m - 200m to Piccirillo's move.

That being said, she was at 3:00 with 1 to go so if she can figure out her kick, it will be tough for others to hang with that pace.

Not odd, just promising. Didn't the heats get shuffled around to give them 2xslow 5000-about 30 min extra rest?

I don't completely disagree w your premise. There's some humor in there as it turns Koko and KT into 2 ships that pass in the night. Koko running 2nd half of 800 1500 workout and Tuohy running first half of 1500 5k workout. There just happened to be a starters gun and Piccirillo latching on to these workouts to pr at 1500.

Good thing they did this by the way, as track fest didn't count, so 15:50 is kt's q.

The more I pay attention to the chatter, the more I realize that the poster who mentioned training cycle is probably right. I didn't believe it when I first heard it, but they really did shut down Touhy after indoor for a week or two to ramp up a whole new training block targeting July peak. So Wake and possibly Fest were just trained through. That gives me more faith that a 4:04/8:35 athlete shows up in Austin.
