The current record Is underestimated. Both Ray Flynn and Eamonn Coghlan were 3:49 milers, Coghlan indoors. Marcus O'Sullivan and Frank O'Mara were 3:51 guys and this was back in 1985. Every year, someone always gets together to take a shot at this and they always fail. Teare, Hocker, Wisner and James West fell short last year too. ON didnt even break 16 with Flanagan, Hoare, Elmer and Klecker
Yes, its beatable if you get the right team together but its nowhere near as soft as some here make out.
"Predicting the bonk" suggested the best strategy. Centro leads off and gauge your efforts from there. At least Centro has options. Either move to the roads in distance or retire.
Those are on-paper times with almost no relevance because the athletes aren’t currently at that level or close. You going to put a 3:49 Centro in the US squad by that logic?
I don´t think a 4:01.56 is bad as a season opener. Centro normally run much faster in the high season.
4:01.56 in the mile equals 3:43.6 in the 1500m. If he ran alone his time more or less equals his season opener in Palo Alto 2018 where he ran high 3:40 in the 1500m in a race with a competive field and 2 pacemakers (in that race he and other American top runners, including Chelimo, Engels and Fisher were destroyed by a certain Norwegian teenager).
In 2018 Centro went on to run high 3:31 in the Monaco 1500m in July so I don´t think we shall write him off yet.

That was 5 years ago. That's a long time in the career of a professional athlete. Do you also think he could run 3.31 in another 5 years?
