We changed the title of this thread. It initially was entirled, "Jonathan J. Marcus, What is your LetsRun Username? J. Marcus accuses Yared Nuguse of Doping Based on....." We removed the first half as we didn't think it was really relevent to the discussion at hand.
Somax has been working with runners since 1970, when the running boom started. Most of our early clients were runners who complained of tight hamstrings. We were able to improve their hamstring flexibility far beyond what the...
On Twitter, Jonathan J. Marcus accuses (somewhat indirectly) Yared Nuguse of doping based off of Yared's hip position during the push-off/propulsion phase.
A bunch of pseudo-science mumbo jumbo. He doesn't have force sensors on Nuguse's spikes, so he has no idea how much force is being put into the ground at that point in the stride. It's almost certainly very little. The force is greatest when the foot passes directly under the body. Nuguse is getting a bit more than other people at that point in the stride just by the fact his foot is on the ground, but that's fractionally more of a small amount of force. I see no reason to make multiple very questionable leaps in logic that it is a high energetic cost form and therefore must be doping. Nuguse has pretty flexible hip flexors, and his legs go back that far just to get the elastic forward return of the leg at that speed. That's what a lot of us are trying to achieve when we do drills/stretches that stretch the hip flexors.
Wait until this dude analyzes Seb Coe's form, with an even greater "late propulsive thrust" form:
- Marcus has a degree in religious studies. I'm all for autodidacts, but misunderstanding and misapplication of scientific studies is common in people without formal training - a group in which I would include anyone without an advanced degree in a hard science.
- this guy has been a known creep in Portland circles for at least the last 15 years. He should not be provided the oxygen of publicity which clearly sustains him.
Ritz has his athletes working with the same doctors that NOP did.
It's the grey area playbook.
The form analysis is dumb. But the overall point is probably accurate.
Salazar never had an athlete as talented as Nuguse. Took 2.51 seconds off Lagat's record despite a pedestrian third 400. In one race he crushed every other American born miler except for Alan Webb. Barring injury that will happen. Just pray that Ritz doesn't hurt him. Who needs grey area stuff when you've got the genes?
Man, the takes just keep coming off the back of Nuguse's performance. One thread compared him to Cheptegei, now he's more talented than any athlete Salazar coached. Yes, his run was amazing, but Salazar coached the MFing Olympic 1500m champion, and some British guy who twice won the 5/10k Olympic double (plus 6 World Champs holds). He had some supremely talented athletes, one a US legend and another who is in the conversation for the distance GOAT. Talent is measured in global medals, and we'll find out later this year just how talented Nuguse is. I'm excited to find out

That's easy to say. "100% right," is it?? Do you have, or can you point to any testing that would corroborate your claim? It's tiring to have the "naysayer crowd" immediately jump to the doping claim just because a result is good quality.

He's also known for being a jerk as well and pissed off just about every running group and runner in the area. He thinks he's the smartest person in the room and if you don't believe me, all you have to do is ask him yourself.
Seriously what does JMar and Magness do for money??? They're not coaching, their podcast sure as he'll doesn't make money... how do these guys make a living?

Yeah these form fanatics are something else. He says that Rudisha's's form "makes sense" but Yared's does not. Someone explain to me the huge difference in their trailing legs.

They scan the training programmes of coaches from the 1960s then sell them to high school coaches
I like the Magness & Marcus podcast. I've been catching up on it recently. I think Jon Marcus tweeted something stupid, but I think I understand how he got there.
On the podcast, they have often expressed some skepticism about how real pro race results are. Looking at the recent history of doping scandals, that skepticism is justified. They're actually more cautious than a lot of LRC posters. Usually their criteria for calling BS is if an athlete has been running big workouts without needing the typical recovery. It's a reasonable criterion, since a lot of PEDs target recovery, although I think it's still never 100% clear.
Starting in the 2021-era podcasts, I noticed Jon Marcus getting more outspoken about running form, saying that there were correct and incorrect movement patterns, and the right ones could be taught. It's possible he's gotten more absolutist about it since then, but I haven't caught up far enough.
I suspect Jon Marcus is wrong. Clean form is usually preferable, but there are lots of fast runners with weird running form. Now he's combining one correct idea (there are a lot of dopers) with one bad idea (the one correct running form is required for fast running) and coming up with a nutso conclusion he should have kept to himself.
Twitter isn't doing anyone any favors by letting them show off their unedited versions of themselves.
You mean CRISPR, the gene editing technology? So basically the leading biotechnology experts at the top research institutes in the world have figured out how to edit someone's genes to improve their performance in the mile, and they decided not to reveal their discoveries to the world and get the scientific recognition for which they have worked their entire lives. Instead, they are getting paid a couple thousand dollars from the OAC to use it on Nuguse.
Hahahaha....perfect.
Yeah, just imagine what a soft goods start up with an 11 billion market cap could pay to have an exclusive on that technology and have the inventors forego other remuneration. A few hundred billion, right? They could just borrow the money and tell the bank that they needed to buy shoelaces because they heard a worldwide shortage was imminent.
Why this is a hot thread on LRC is laughable. Marcus hasn't been relevant in the sport for years now and is basically blacklisted by anyone even remotely in charge of anything in the sport.
Will he also draw imaginary lines on photos of each of the 52 guys that ran sub4 on Saturday? I'm guessing many of them also made sudden improvements with hip thrusting.
This is not the first time JMar has started a controversial thread on twitter (his whole alcohol and "soad" rant previously) so I have to wonder if he's just oblivious to the push back when he posts these or he does it on purpose to get a lot of publicity and then hopefully a small amount of them will agree and pay for the running scholar crap
