Washington has 7 milers under 3:57 this season. Warhurst had some decent results in the 1900s. Gags and Lanana also had some milers back before smart phones. Step into the 2020s.

It is too early to say he is a generational talent. He is a pro now, so he is to be measured by other pros. Qualifying that with his age just means you assume he will keep improving rapidly. That may happen or it may not. You don’t get credit for things that might happen in the future.

If, like stats don't lie, you're stuck on the idea that Hobbs should be a broke college kid at NAU, then you'd do well to remember that NAU is not the only place in the world that produces fast runners, Hobbs 1500 PR converts to faster than any of the NAU guys PRs, Hobbs is clearly developing the aerobic strength that will help him in the long run this year, plus Hobbs made the smart choice of making a solid living as a teenager.
Finally, the idiots on this thread, and a lot of others, need to get a grip. Just like Athing Mu gets ripped on for not racing enough, or not making her races exciting enough, or any one of a million things, Hobbs is a constant point of criticism on this board. Obviously, Jim Ryun in 1966 as a 19 year old would not have run as poorly as HOBBS. Quite the contrary. Jim Ryun today, at 75*, at least would have stuck his head in the race more and come through halfway at 1:59.

I think people keep ignoring the 2:16.x 1000M the 1:46.x 800 the 7:39.0 3K and the 3:36's and 3:37's as if they are run all the time by 19 year olds here..they are not..not by Americans.
This is a long game approach, there is no pressure or need to run PR over PR over PR at 1500/mile to get better..that I can tell you for certain. For the uneducated on here there is a focus to run faster immediately.
Check Webb's progression..and Ron only had him one year.
It took him three years to go from 3:38 and 3:53 mile to 3:32. More than that to go from 1:47.7 to break 1:45..six years.
. Like I told you, progress is not always linear, ask Gary Martin as well. Not many 8:41 HS 3200M guys who are healthy finish 163rd in NCAA Cross.I doubt he is washed up.

At this point it is clear that a foreign entity, Adidas, is signing HS runners with the intent to ruining their careers to stop american distance running from being great. Drew Hunter and Hobbs Kessler were not ready for the pro ranks out of high school, they were not ready to compete in pro fields. Just because they could hang mid-back pack doesn't mean they could skip NCAA's. I doubt either of them would have even won NCAA's as frosh, but they would have matured under the excellent coaches at Oregon and NAU, and developed into national champions and guys capable of competing for wins at quality races (the qualifier for the Wanameker mile isn't it). Instead addidas had these guys train with crackpot coaches at start-distance training groups that didn't have people at their talent levels, much moreso for Drew at Tinman elite. These guys had their careers sabatoged. I don't blame them, they were offered real money and as an 18 year old with no idea of adidas malicious intent, why would they have rejected?
But to neutral obsevers, it is now clear, adidas has conspired to keep american distance running from greatness by sabatoging our prodigies. I’ve done a little more thinking about this and decided to look at some actual data to try and help put Hobbs Kessler in perspective.
Grant Fisher. Arguably the greatest American distance runner ever. When he graduated from Stanford at age 22, had PB’s of 1:51, 3:39, 7:42. Go look at his TFRRS.
Hobbs Kessler, currently age 19. Has PB’s of 1:46, 3:34, 7:39. Still has 2+ years before he will be the age Fisher was when he graduated from Stanford. He and Ron are doing just fine. End of thread.

He has been a pro for 2 years in the same way as he is “19”. You are comparing someone that has been a pro for two years to someone that was just a student athlete and admittedly more concerned with his classes.
The stock market isn’t given to go up. Some startups go big, most fail. You pretend like the only option is for this startup to be the next Google. Declaring it as such before it has gotten off the ground.
Plus... he has stated outright that the focus of this winter is getting stronger not speed because that's where they think he's weakest. So he goes out and trains and then runs a fast 3k and huge PR.
So let's get this straight. Kid has fast PRs, he and his coach decide the best thing for his long term development is to improve strength. He then goes out, improves his strength, and runs a time that would place him at the top end of NCAA history if he had decided to do what all you "he has to be judged as a pro" morons would have had him do. A time that is a huge improvement for him.
But because he was probably sick and had a bad race in February, all the coaching, training and performances that are focused on the long-term potential of a teen athlete in a sport where most runners peak in their late-20s, is bad?
