What an incredibly awkward thing to do. I have second hand embarrassment for her. Also, if it's true that later she didn't want Kara to join Oiselle? Omg.
I wonder what the email said and how Kara and shalane took it:
"Hey guys, i know that i didnt qualify, but i was wondering if you would consider giving up your spot for me? Because what "i" believe is that "i" (not you, who qualified) will be best for the job. Basically, i dont think the results were right, and..yeah i think im better than you. So..what do you think? Could i have that spot?"
I thought the NC State strategy was to keep the pace of the pack reasonable for their 3/4/5/6/7 runners for as long as possible as opposed to Tuohy and Chmiel chasing a breakaway like Valby and stringing out the entire field. It seemed to work as Tuohy holding back until 3500 kept a large pack coming thru together at a decent pace. Starting at 4500 m, the hills really seemed to take their toll on Valby while Tuohy just powered up each one of them. To Valby's credit she held her speed but she had no answer when caught.
There is really an important difference between XC and track here. Running away from an XC field is more effective psychologically because runners have usually a hard time gauging the distances as exactly as on a track (esp. today with large videoscreens and clocks). Esp. in a team race, there is also the possibility that some runners might just be content with a decent placement and not risk chasing. And it worked well for Valby, she got the best result she could hope for.
It can work on track, e.g. Ngugi in the 5000m Seoul 1988, or Yasemin Can at last years's Euro 10000m but it's very risky.
Monson will probably have to try. I have a hard time imagining her sitting in the pack and letting it become a kickers race. Some of these athletes probably have more speed for a final kick.
It's very hard to control and break opponents that are faster than you.
My guess here was that Norris, S-haufen, and Vissa would lead this race, with Monson/Tuohy tucked in behind. If Monson leads, the 3 true milers will just sit and kick. Will for sure be interesting with so many unknown talented entries.
Curious about the pacing too. All I can find on Kali long is that she is more of 25s 200m sprinter with a 2:26 800m PR. Someone else mentioned Monson was next to the pacer in the lineup so I assume it's her, but if so I can't see her pacing through 800.
I still think Monson will have to go out fast if she wants a chance, she is probably not beating Norris and Vissa if it comes down to a last lap.
Dude, try recognizing that Tuohy is going to be more than 8secs behind the winner, and accordingly adjust your expectations of how the race will play out.
Hello?!? Monson just demonstrated she can run a sub-4:18 mile (sea level altitude conversion) in an indoor workout! The only way her and Norris do not literally blow the doors off Tuohy is if they hold back (for undisclosed reasons).

Bruh, my prediction way back on page 1 was 4:27, so she could well be 8 seconds back, all lost in last 600. The 3 milers, Monson and Touhy are the fastest in the field, so Tuohy won't be getting lost back in the pack somewhere.

And then you walked it back, and said a 4:32 is ‘satisfactory’ and that Tuohy should just tuck behind Monson. Bruh, if Monson runs this anywhere close to her capability, touhy will be three seconds down after only three laps, capiche?

Monson using this as Millrose tune up/indoor opener, I don't share thought that she goes for win. Only disaster for KT is if she runs 4:37+, then she wasted a spot and has no qualifier/no PR, while 4:32 is ok. Altitude training not always directly correlated to sea level result, see Herrera, Lalo. Nose between Monson's shoulder blades and hang on. 4:27.

I’m not debating whether altitudetraining works for a sea level race. Instead, I’m referring to a simple altitudeconversion. There is no hand-waving tricks here. Monson ran a 4:26 mile at altitude in a workout, which is worth a 6-7 second faster effort at sea level, per the conversion. You can use an online calculator (e.g., Jack Daniels) to compute that, and you can cross verify it against the NCAA altitude conversion for Boulder:
Monson just demonstrated she is well under 4:20 form, so if she doesn’t break 4:20 in the race, one possibility is she got paid not to embarrass the local collegiate.
But if she does want to run a sub-4:20 race, Monson’s best chance of doing so is to even-split-ratchet-down. If Tuohy tries to hang, she will gas-out and end up crawling across the line (i.e., >4:35).
Tinfoil hat level stuff. Yes I am sure there is a conspiracy for Monson to run slower. No one is expecting Tuohy to win the race. Just want to see if she can be pulled along to a fast college time. Silliness.
I saw the video, I get the conversion, but the 4:26 at practice does not count for a PR or world athletics, usatf etc., nor the conversion. She still has to go through the motions of doing it in a meet, where the converted time is likely, but not guaranteed.
What pace do you think Monson will run, if she is at the front? 65 65 64 kick?
