lemme put it this way. why do you think TF doubles -- outside of running -- are a dime a dozen but XC doubles are rare? my guess it's you either play along with the XC training and they turn you into a full-time runner, or you give up on XC and do your other sport (and maybe TF). i found TF much much much more flexible and attentive to double-training load issues than XC, which tended to operate like football, as though you had nothing else in your life. probably because a lot of TF is football players whose spring practice burden has to be managed. football doesn't see TF as a threat but instead something that gets their kids in shape. so i knew some people who did afterschool, and at times i and others did just athletic period training. i barely saw the hurdles coach for 2 years doing training in athletic period, won most of my races. and then i finally see him and within about 2 weeks of afterschool work he has me punted to sprints -- his best 300H guy. i ran XC and my second year the coach ran me anemic removing the "soccer dispensation" and upping my mileage.
sorry i think some of this is XC tends to not work and play well with other simultaneous sports, or turn you into a year round runner whose "double" is dismissed.
i mean my personal experience we had a half dozen soccer kids out there XC day 1 and by the end of the season i'm the only guy carrying the soccer flag. and next year i blow up healthwise. you're leaving out that while on paper we are HS "doubles," we really play for like 3-4 teams, counting select. XC, TF, school soccer, select soccer. maybe even "ODP soccer" ie the feeder program for the national teams.
ditto AAU hoops. ditto travel baseball. these days many kids outside of something like football are playing a non-school version of their sport when they're not repping their school. if you want a double you have to accommodate, as they won't just be playing school hoops and school baseball, not if they have aspirations. if you demand too much, which my experience is they mimicked football in doing, all the soccer players magically decide they just want to play soccer. hence there's a reason it usually ends up being a lot of year round runners.
i always remembered my XC PR was a week i missed half the practice week sick. fresh leg magic.
Manny Putz missed sophomore track season due to injury. But still took 5th at NXN as a junior (was the top nonsenior finisher there), even though he fell at the start. He barely missed out on making NXN sophomore year.
Another weekend of exciting track and field.........The adidas grand prix dream mile and dream 100 dash.....The Golden West Invite.......The New England Championships............NY Federation.........NJ Meet of Champions!
She ended up running track senior year for Lone Peak.
She’s was on the roster for both XC and track for BYU last year, but I don’t know if she raced for them much. Also it doesn’t appear that she’s on the roster this fall.
