Well, looks like the next wave is coming. Based on history of where they get their recruits, the next batch has already run in 8th grade for 1600:
Micah Dickran 4:45
Adrian Cantu 4:48
Noah Sloan 4:49
Maxwell Roe 4:56
Gabriel Bernardino 4:56
Eli Zasloff 4:59
Probably others as well. Not a bad hand to be dealt.
What are the top times for 8th grade girls that will go to Newbury Park next year?
Hard to say because not all of the good Camarillo Cosmos runners have gone to NP in the past. There are a couple of 5:30ish girls in that youth league. I’m sure they will get some older transfers from the area as the have in the past like Darley and Golmon. There are always enough crazy parents that will yank there kid out of a school before their senior years to chase glory.
I also don’t think Brosnan will leave Newbury Park. I heard in an interview that he wants more sub-4 milers. Some of those incoming freshman sure will have the capability to do so based on their 8th grade times.

We’ll see if any of them run close to 14:37 in their first cross country race or 4:15 miles in their freshman year.
It will be interesting to see which of the local youth club runners will enroll at NP in the fall. Micah Dickran (I think he's 14) in particular looks promising, with bests of :54.5, 2:04.7, and 4:41.2. The dual conference championships are this Saturday so we'll see what the best performances for the club teams are. Also, as much as the attention has come NP's way because of the four big runners the reality is that the overall area is one of the stronger areas in the state so I wouldn't be surprised to see the youth club runners head to different schools in the fall.

The other schools in the area don’t actively recruit middle schoolers from the area. It’s against the rules. It’s easy to recruit against schools when you’re the only one doing it.

Well it’s pretty safe to bet that Adrian Cantu and Noah Sloan will go to Newbury Park since their older brothers are on the team.

There's no mention of the girls team. They're national record holders. There's a tonne to build on the back of this. I don't see Brosnan jumping ship because the boys programme won't have insane depth.
Is there much of a reason to mention the girls team? They lose 3 of their top 5 after this year and there is a big drop after their top 2 retiring with a major cliff after their top 3 returning. Maybe they get some new incoming girls and transfers, but there isn’t much to build on currently on the team.
Not that insane depth isn’t there on the boys side, but more like they could be way down other than Doshi who may not improve as much as one might think without the leadership in front of him.
Things look bleak, but you never know who could show up.
Yeah, so Newbury Park girls won’t be as good as Buchanan or Great Oak. These teams return virtually everybody.
In Brosnan's case he didn't just randomly come to Ventura County where he eventually found a position at NPHS. He got there as a result of his wife landing a nice job in her field (environmental water management, or something close to that) in the VC area. Going forward I'm guessing that any future career moves will be made with both of them in mind.
If that's the case and she's working for a quasi-government water company whether county, state, or city....it's more than likely their pay is pretty nice and her pension is better than CAL STRS. Their pensions are not all identical and some are better than others. My better half has worked for the state of CA water authority and SD County Water Authority and she lets me know about it everyday.
Ok, so is he is listed as one of 2 head coaches, focusing on distance. As head coach, the overall program is partly his responsibility. Also, his distance team is tiny. What are the school and league refs that limit their roster size? Thousand Oaks has over 150 kids on their team and is in the same league and school district.
I think NP has around 125-130 kids total. Their website talks about having to make cuts so that they couldn't accommodate more athletes. If I had to guess those cuts would distributed evenly across all events. You make it sound as though Brosnan just marches into the school and has 100 hand picked kids to train. That's not the reality.
Cuts are not at all uncommon in CA for sports now, because many districts do not fund teams as much and ways of fundraising are limited or NOT district approved. Some coaches have just walked away it can add so much more to the job. It's also technically illegal in CA to charge students a sports participation whether it be for a uniform or participation fee due to equity issues and many districts/coaches were busted for doing that. Gosh...years back I remember Doug Soles was talking about limiting his track team size to 300 for this reason. So if NP limits their numbers for this reason, then so be it. The staff needs their "happy place" on where they can balance the job comfortably. Besides....cuts create competition and forces athletes to train year round. Are you a varsity team or club? Those were words from ex-Dana Hills coaching great Tim Butler who limited his boys XC team to 60.
Your donation of $200 per athlete supports the Track & Field program. All donations go directly to pay for coaches, equipment, entry fees, uniform top…everything it takes to run, and to have, a track season. Without your financial support, the program would not be able to function. Donations can be made by credit card online or at the Parent Meeting on January 31st by cash, check or credit card.
This is bull! I knew it, I’ve questioned many times how there program gets all their $$$. My school is extremely low income, where kids don’t even have running shoes. There running in slip on Vans. It takes money to get a good program. When my kids go home, they don’t have much, no wi fi , no computers. These kids have it all. Brosnan a crook

$200 ain't nothing. Especially with their meet schedule. I remember some teams charging upwards of $400 and that was 15 years ago.

I know someone who had a kid on the team a couple years ago. It cost a LOT more than $200 and it was a constant string of asking for more money every time they went to a meet.

This is not like a big time D1 college, where a football team helps to keep all the non revenue sports afloat. The pity is that schools in less affluent communities have an even more difficult time raising $. And with NP the latest is that they're having an auction/donations to help raise $ for their summer camp in Big Bear. Turns out that the rental units have jacked their prices considerably. Can't say that I blame them, but they have an advantage over almost every other program- beyond friends and family members who can afford to contribute their success this year might attract donations from fans that are not affiliated with the program. And even at NP some of the families are not affluent.
I find this hard to believe....someone in that group is making money. I'm not saying it is alot but there is some director or coach that is getting compensated.
So that crop is even better than the Lex, Aaron S. and Leo crop?
Looks pretty similar. A few questions:
1)if they are as fast at the same age as the Young/Sahlman class, we should expect similar results, right? if not, what would the reason be?
2) with the exception of Doshi, who ran 5:00 as a 7th grader, which means he probably would have run similar times as the Young/Sahlman crew, the rest of the current freshman and sophomores are not even close to the Young/Sahlman class. Why aren’t there even a couple that are close to that group? Two years with only one decent runner - why?
3) if the incoming Freshmen turn out somewhat as good as the Young/Sahlman class, but the current freshmen and sophomores don’t get close by the end of their careers, what does that tell us?
It’s simply rare to have 3 8th graders run what L/L/A Sahlman ran in 8th grade

If it's rare to have 3 8th graders that fast, how rare is it to have 10? Their top 10 runners were all youth stars with times well under 5 minute equivalent. They are an incredible high school team, but they were also an incredible team before they showed up at Newbury Park. Maybe I'm wrong, but I can't fathom another team in the country who has half as many sub 5:00 8th graders on their team. Does anyone know of one?
