I also find treadmill running far more difficult than running outside, and for me, I think it is a balance issue. I have very poor balance, and at treadmill speeds any faster than 10:00 mile pace, I am in constant fear that one misplaced footstrike is going to throw me off the thing, and cause serious injury. So the difficulty is more of a mental problem than a physical one, or so it seems to me.
I'm 65 years old, currently in about 24 minute 5K shape, and it could be an old age issue as well, I suppose. But treadmill running has always been difficult for me.
