Really? Then why didn’t Nedasekau get gold as well? Oh that’s right, because there’s tiebreakers where consistency matters. Having a jump off to continue the tiebreak and prove consistency is completely rational. But so is both of them refusing a jump off as they are guaranteed the gold. This is a problem with the rules and nothing else.

The best attempt of all was the Belorussian's try at 2.39m, just a hair off. In a jump off that included him, even though he had misses at lower heights, he would have been my bet for gold.

Yeah, some good points made by you and others here regarding the mechanics. There is a sense in which it isn't height alone that is valued; consistency is too, else the misses rule wouldn't make sense, and jumping a lowered bar is essentially a test of consistency. But we might also want to avoid a war of attrition, as you say.

Along the other line of argument here, though, I disagree more strongly. The Olympics may well be 'about' coming together, but in engineering these types of situations only lies the increasing banality of special moments. Whether this rule could be seen to do that is arguable either way.

Why? They tied. If two athletes in the 100 tied they would both get gold. (and yes it is possible. I have been a finishlynx operator for years and have seen a tie, down to the same pixel line). Why break the tie just because you can? They both jumped well, both beat everyone else, and both went out at the same time. They had the exact same result.

What’s more surprising to me is that two Golds have never been awarded on the Olympic high jump before.

It looks like the last time that happened in the pole vault was 1904.

Ties are usually broken by who took fewer attempts in total.

If someone started at a higher height or skipped a height and they otherwise cleared the same height until three consecutive misses, that person would get the Gold.

If they take all of the same attempts and clear the same ones, it’s a tie.

I wonder if there were jump offs in the past.

The correct answer

As I understand it, the rule allows either a jumpoff or a shared medal. One question: what is the default? That is, do both athletes have to agree to have a jumpoff or do both have to agree NOT to have a jumpoff? If they don't agree, what happens?

We all know that in races--running, swimming, etc.--ties result in shared medals and not another race to break the tie. Should jumping be different? The obvious difference between running and high jumping is that the latter is discrete. The bar is raised by finite amounts at once, while in running much smaller differences in time can be distinguished. This would seem to make ties much more likely in high jumping.

How is this situation handled in analogous sports like weightlifting? If two lifters succeed at the same weight and both fail at the next higher weight, are two medals awarded or is there a "lift-off"?

It looked to me that Tamberi only started celebrating after Barshim *had* agreed verbally (something was said, but I could not hear what). He also did his 'horizontal' hand gesture (of 'no more') before Tamberi's exuberance?

Also the two have a longer history, as beautifully written op on the worldathletics.com website (Tamberi describing how after his catastrophic injury in 2016, he had troubles on his return in 2017, and Barshim banging on his door the day after insisting to talk to Tamberi to support him and urge him to keep going - reading that story after seeing today's images will make you cry (again).
