Wrightman, a total NOBODY, just ran faster than Cram or Coe ever did in the 1500. Faster than Centro, Nick Willis, Maree, Ovett. Only ONE HUNDREDTH of a second behind Said Aouita's WORLD RECORD. Also .01 behind the legendary DANIEL KOMEN who still has the 3k world record.

Sorry, but Wrightman is nowhere close to their level. It's the shoes, folks.

Did you guys not read our recap? In a normal year, if you add up all of the Stanford and Mt SAC 10,000S, THERE ARE HARDLY ANY SUB-28S. The NCAA records only go back to 2010. From 2010 to 2021, we had a total of 11 guys break 28:00 for 10,000 in the NCAA total for all races. We had 10 do it in one race and 13 in one year.

Ah yes, at the NCAA meet. But “any single collegiate EVER”? Mantz was already faster just this season. 14 have been faster than Dever’s time and only one in the new shoes. And that’s excluding out of season.

Champs get tactical. This one did not. The shoes help, but partly by placebo effect. But not near the frenzy here. I almost have to wonder if it’s all Nike-arranged PR. :-)

The men's 10k WR was broken every single year from 93-98, including twice in 93. It was also broken 3 times in 1924 and 3 times in 1949. The women's 10k was broken 14 times in a 10 year period in the 70s/80s.

The men's 5k WR was broken 4 times in 1954, 4 times in 1965, and twice 9 days apart in 1997. We just weren't used to seeing records broken over the past 15 years.

Who is Wrightman? Wightman didn't "just" run that fast. That was almost a year ago in New Balance shoes. Gregorek ran a 3:49, what!? (in Asics 2 years ago). Sometimes things just go right and a runner gets an oddly fast time.

Super spikes played a minor roll here...maybe 10 seconds faster, maybe less.

The big anomaly here is Kiptoo. Nobody does that in an NCAA 10K. He went out hard, just like he always does. It's not like these guys aren't capable of this every year(although this is a particularly talented year).

The weather was perfect. The track is a brand new fast track. Kiptoo paced. Seasoned studs like Mantz and Brandt weren't letting him get away. It pulled everyone along. It's really that simple. The race played out perfectly for fast times.

If the new shoes/spikes really do improve times that dramatically everyone would be wearing them bc if they don't they will be at a disadvantage. I haven't paid much attention to their footwear at the ncaas yet, Is everyone wearing them?

None of those other years had a perfectly paced championships 10k in perfect conditions. So if you ignore this race, which didn't happen in those other years, you're left with 3 sub-28 performances this year - a pretty normal year.

spikes can be say 0.5 sec / lap with the other factors being 0.5 combined for improvement.

that is a whopping 25 seconds all in.

in the 1500 that is 2 seconds.

which lines up with the 2021 improvements.

certainly speculation on my part, rampant informed speculation.

i'd need to run in the spikes, which i haven't and train with or coach tons of athletes, which i haven't.

experts need to comment to get a better handle on it.

What is the definitive list of spikes in each event that would qualify as a “super spike” for that race.

All you have to do is go back pre Bekele and WRs were broken all the time. The outlier years were the years with no records between Bekele and Cheptegei.
