Can you explain why the Van Allen belt is dangerous and why the precautions that NASA reports taking to avoid it during the Apollo missions were either insufficient or farcical? The radiation flux there is high, but not that high. The radiation dosage received by someone traveling through the belt for a few hours in a minimally shielded spacecraft would be roughly equivalent to the amount a commercial airline pilot would receive over a few years of flying. Obviously, that's concerning if you're spending weeks there, but not if you're only transiting through

I don't know enough about it to make an absolute judgement but I think it is an interesting discussion. I would have to read a lot more and have a much better understanding of physics amongst other things. I don't think it is that outrageous of a suggestion compared to some theories like flat earth and that crazy thing posted about dinosaurs at 4000BC on an ark and no humans before that time.

EM models predict that the particles are funneled to the north and south poles, where they penetrate into the atmosphere and cause the aurorae. Thus there are very few such particles present directly above the magnetic poles - there is a "hole" in the belt. If it were not this shape, it would not be called a "belt". The shape and size of the belt at any given moment is a product of the interaction between magnetic field of the earth, which varies as the liquid core rotates and sloshes around, and the oncoming solar wind, which itself varies with solar output. It's possible to predict its size and shape and to plot a course through local minima in the belt

This is theoretically possible, but in order to get good images of the stuff left on the moon, you would need a monster telescope. Specifically, you would need the biggest land-based telescope ever built. Not exactly a good hobbyist project. However, a satellite-based telescope like the one on the LRO can spot the stuff quite easily, and it would be easy to spot the laser inferometer - if you knew exactly where to look.
