I know the women’s 5000 was a few hours ago at this point. But I don’t know if I’ve ever seen anyone break as completely as Tsegay did. To lose six seconds in 150 meters is almost unthinkable.
I am so psyched. Starts in a few minutes. That Men's International mile field is loaded. Could their winning time be within 2 seconds of Bowerman winner? Weather looks good. mid to upper 70s, a little wind, no humidity.
Jakob should move up to the 5k/10k and dominate there. Niels Laros will dominate the 1500m for him and Europe will once again be the greatest distance running continent.
I dont think he'll dominate. He's got the talent, but he's up and down with various injuries. And Europe will never be the greatest distance continent.
Kersee deserves every bit of criticism but 2:03 is so slow that I’m angrier at Mu, honestly.
It’s not about Kersee, any useless high school could write up some generic program and have her running 1:59x as long as she does bare minimum workouts. Running this slow means that she’s not mentally in it, and barely putting any work in.
I'd written something similar before I saw this.
I'd agree totally other than, assuming she's well phsyically, she is suffering from nerves to the degree that it's totally inhibiting her ability to run. Without knowing what she's doing in training it's difficult to know.
Can't believe they wouldn't run a 600m time trial before throwing her in there.
As a guy who ran 1:57.5 about 40 years ago, I'd say - assuming she is not injured and is in good health - it really wouldn't be hard to get her into at least 1:57.xx shape.
I was a lot slower over 400m and about the same at 1500m, and got there off things like 4x400m in 57/58 on a Tuesday and 8x200m in 27/28 working down to 25 sec. on a Thursday with a race (anywhere from 800m to 3000m s/c) or another session on Saturday, and steady running inbetween.
Given the improvement in tracks, shoes, bicarb, and all the peripheral things a full-time athlete can do (I was working full time), almost anyone could coach her to 1:57.xx shape.
If she's healthy and uninjured, I'd say she either doesn't want to do it any more or she's so inhibited by nerves she just can't perform.
I don't think Athing Mu is that out of shape, she just didn't want to be there. It's more mental than physical.
It's hard to be sure since we don't have any details of her training.
If she has produced some reasonable sessions, and she does want to carry on, it may be a question of a sports psychologist, things like visualization or even hypnotherapy.
I went through a phase where I could train OK, but coming up to a race, I'd get something where I felt weak, and like a bad cold. It would go away after I'd run. I think it was too much cortisol, and eventually it would be like an adrenal fatigue. Eventually hypnotherapy worked well for me.
If she is training at a level better than what she ran today, it could nerves, a little like 'yips' in golf..
Damn - 10.75 into a -1.5 headwind?? What does that convert to at 0.0?
Also, SCR looks to have gone the way of Mu this year. Idk what's up but she looks well out of it
10.67. SCR gets a bigger headwind adjustment because she is so small. Her 11.17 is 11.08, vastly better than her 11.4x. She normally motors the last 30 but slowed relative to others the last 15m. Not bad for what is essentially a rust-buster. And she might have given up s bit and lost another 0.02/.03. No sharpness at all, so she has lots of time.
Why is no one talking about Alfred who ran her fastest race ever adjusting for wind. Clayton under performed but adjusting for wind everyone ran pretty well.
27 upvotes? are you guys stupid? he ran slower at Pre last year than he did today
This is a good result for him at this point of the season. The emphasis has always been the championship race for him . A much better result when he finished 7th last year at this race. People thought that 13:09 5k dl race would carry over to the mile lol.

For someone who is so massively talented, it's a travesty that she runs so poorly so often. There is such a lack of consistency with her.
Cap off this thread by saying this was hands down the best track meet of the year so far. Great races start to finish. Awesome stuff!
Agreed. I really enjoyed it. Thanks to the BBC for broadcasting it. The commentary was really good (Tim Hutchings and Steve Cram) and the performances at the meet were outstanding. Two world records and 11 women below four minutes in the 1500! Amazing. Looking forward to the next one now.
Impressive indeed. She was a middling runner for many years and all of a sudden she is running toe-to-toe with the greatest 1500 runner ever. She was an effing journey woman runner.
Jess Hull has been world class since 2020 and improving each year because she hasn't had major injuries.
Was easily in the top 3 1500m runners last year both on times and at OG got a medal.
Nobody else is fit enough or has the guts to go for it with Faith and she deserves every result she gets.
Hunter-Bell is the one who came out of nowhere last year.

I think some form of nerves is the logical explanation. But it’s frustrating because at this point I’m not sure if it will ever get better. It’s been more than two years now since it started (remember “might go on vacation, might go to Budapest”?).
Anthing Mu-Nikolayev is, by resume, the best middle distance runner the US has ever produced. And she might be done at 22. It’s genuinely agonizing to see as a fan of hers.
Did Crouser retire?? I love Joe but....Trey Hardee talk'in like Kovacs is main man.
Injured.
Yep sorry, I was being sarcastic. Trey was really throwing around the superlatives regarding Joe as if Ryan never existed. I taped the meet and will revisit his commentary.
Imagine you grew up poor in a violent neighborhood and your friend got shot. You tried to stay out of the violence but it touched you anyway. And everyone has always bothered you or hit you or threatened you for your efforts to stay clean. Is that not a recipe for a teenager to pick up a gun and teach some bullies a lesson? I think it's pretty easy to imagine a path to a life sentence for a normal person in such a place. It's not as simple as "these people are bad." A few are, as they are anywhere, and the environment makes more of them bad, and then it spreads through retaliation and survival. Very tough to undo once it starts. Similar to why, btw, people are so worried about military in the streets and masked people grabbing immigrants -- yeah it's bad now, but will it ever be enough? Once you make the Gestapo or KGB, they don't go back in their holes willingly.
I know it's not a popular event in here but women's shot put has so much depth right now. Obviously they're not gonna get close to the distances from the 70s and 80s but I can't remember the last time 5 women threw beyond 20m in the same competition. Did a quick Google search and my best guess would be the 1988 Olympic final
This chart doesn't include today at Pre. The event desperately needs / deserves a WR reset to highlight the work of modern athletes.

Hopefully she's saving herself for the only race that matters?
