1) I would not label those groups as nasty and evil, no; however, there are a LOT of people in those groups who are either nasty or evil.
2) I agree that most people, even in those greatly flawed groups, are trying to live their lives as good moral people. How many people in the United States identify as Religious Right, Moral Majority, Christian Conservatives, and/or Conservative Evangelicals in this country? Depending on what poll you believe, any where from 25% on up to over 50% do. 327 million people in the US currently. Let's take just 25% of that number, so 81.75 million people. If we were to say just 1% of 81.75 million were either evil or nasty (I say it's a tad more), then that is 817,500 people in the United States who are Conservative Christians who are either evil or nasty, or 16,350 per US state. I used the most conservative numbers here, and that's still a LOT of people.
3) While 16,350 per US state is a LOT of nasty or evil CHRISTIAN CONSERVATIVES, I suggest the real number is much higher. There is a big percentage of people who identify as Conservative Christians either due to their traditional upbringing that they hold on to without much thought or effort, and then a big percentage who identify as Christian Conservatives because they believe they will go to hell if they don't...self preservation ONLY for some of them. Those who are for self-preservation ONLY are not good people and therefore have a great chance of being nasty or evil. While still the majority of Christian Conservatives, not all of them are in it for family and to help the poor and better themselves and to practice grace.
Here are examples of what I consider to be nasty or evil.
Nasty - A) old biddy yelling at kids having a good yet reasonable time during the cookie/coffee time after the service, threatening to pull their hair. B) Couple of whacked out women and their husbands who told my United Methodist minister father in the 70s that they would not listen to the word of God from a man with a beard. Yes, they actually said that to him and then left the church. [cue commonly accepted picture of Jesus].
Evil - A) Any member of the Westboro Baptist Church or anyone with not only the hatred for a specific group of people, but the gall to hold up such offensive signs. B) Any person (and unfortunately there are a lot of people who consider themselves Conservative Christians who do this) who actively try to limit civil liberties to anyone based on the color of their skin, ethnic background, or who they love.
If you don't think there are a lot of nasty and evil people out there who identify as Christian Conservatives, then you simply haven't met enough of them.
