Fisher didn't have his A game tonight, but he didn't have it at USAs last year either. He doesn't peak for this meet. And like Hocker, he always seems to be at his very, very best at the olympics. he plays to the level of his competition. Hopefully he can exceed that next month.

Just listening to the reaction show now. rojo claiming "Fisher was going to destroy these guys" jinxed him, darn it rojo.
Let's go back to the 80s and 90s when there was 4 rounds at the trials for the 800. Think about that.... How about doubling the 5 and 10. Two rounds of the 10 followed by 3 rounds of the 5. With the first round of the 5 the DAY AFTER the 10 final. You had to be tough.
lol. Carl Lewis in 84:
100 prelims, heats, semis, finals
200 prelims, heats, semis finals
LJ semis, finals
4x100 heats, semis, finals
Just inhuman. Cannot understand how people got through that.
the 1984 trials (like most) were spread out 9-10 days, not packed into a weekend like national champs
no last mile, but Cheptegei ran last 2k in 5:10, last 1k in 2:25 and a 54 last lap off a 26:43 race. Though superspikes might skew things a bit.
Most guys are priming for the last km rather than last 1600. That's certainly how Farah has always talked about it. And that is damn impressive from Cheptegei. 2:25 on that pace is brutal. I'm not even sure prime Farah and Bekele could have lived with that

A good act does not wash out the bad, nor a bad act the good
Really looking forward to the 10ks but idk if I'll get to see it live. Would love to see Roe make her first team, and it'll be the first chance we get to see Nico and Blanks up against Fisher since they became 12:4x guys. Muhumed is also rocking a 27:03 pb, and while I think he probably doesn't make the team, he's a whole lot closer to the top guys than Hunter was going into last year, so it wouldn't shock me too much.
Am I reading the 800 round quals right? Top 6 from 8 person heats + 3 time quals get through, so 32 enter and 27 get through? I guess the semis are brutal with only the top 2 getting through + 3 time quals, but idk I feel like you could add another heat to the 1st round and cut a few more people. I kinda feel like this gets said every year but it just doesn't feel very cutthroat.
The 1500 heats though, 3 Qs + 3 qs in 12 person heats is gonna be brutal, definitely gonna be at least 1 pretty big upset. Heat 1 has Strand, Kessler, Koech as probably the 3 favorites, but it shouldn't surprise anyone if Teffra got top 3. Heat 3 has Nuguse (3:43 + Oly bronze), Martin (3:48i), Houser (world indoor bronze), Murphy (NCAA 1500 record holder), Ciatti (3:31 + 4th last year). If Strand goes out I will crash out. Hocker gonna be chilling in heat 2 with 11 people and probably Green as the strongest competitor.
Edit I'm gonna predict Nico-Fisher-Blanks in the 10k in that order (I think Fisher pushes the last mile hard to make sure he makes the team and Nico outkicks him). Annndddd Cranny-Kelati-Roe for the W10k. Cranny seems to always peak well for USAs.
Dang I crushed with my M10k prediction, not bad for my W10k, just didn’t see Infield coming at all, super stoked for her!
Solid first day for all, save that two Olympic medallists - Annette E in the W HT and Jasmine Moore in W LJ - have not made it (this point may have been made earlier in the thread and I have missed it)..
Fisher looked flat to me. Not as snappy as earlier in the season.
He was probably training through USAs
Were still quite some time off worlds in the grand scheme of things
Yes, I would bet on this. I stayed in Eugene with my family last summer for the trials. We saw him out running long miles virtually every morning, including the day of his last final. We sometimes saw him twice--so can verify he was out for a good bit. That was definitely training through.

Way too much disrespect towards Graham Blanks, I know you want to make a cute/fun pick, but it was obvious these 3 would advance. Not sure Grant cares too much he lost, he'll get his rematch this weekend and he's peaking for worlds. Although I would like his chances better at 10k>5k in beating Nico, Nico is running great right now.
Still sticking with the same 3 in the 5k, they'll run the kick out of Hocker, Wolfe, etc in the last 1.5km.
Probably not, but a few years ago Fisher was pissed because Klecker nipped him over the last lap. Came back in the 5000m and crushed them all going from far out. That did not work with the two young horses last night. The fact that Blanks was with him with two laps to go, no less Nico, he was not going to shake them and it was going to come down to a kick. If the three run the 5000 it will be super interesting. Fisher has pride but Blanks and Nico are just as strong.
Lots of graham cracker Blanks on site. Pretty empty stadium but fun crowd. Nico is on a powerful sedative. Tara’s second jump, which she fouled by a mm was the longest female jump I’ve seen in person. Hot and sticky yesterday with very little breeze, it finally let up for the men’s 10,000. People leave when the skinny runners start their endless laps but the finish of those races were great. People need to stay!
I'm surprised at a variety of comments. First, that Nico, who got dusted in his race after his DL win, is the favorite in Tokyo because he finished faster in a very slow, then medium paced 10,000. The objective was Qualifying; don't burn matches you don't need to. Even gapping Blanks doesn't really tell us much because he had no reason to go to the well.
All three demonstrated that the concerns about Qualifying were not even wrong, they were spectacularly wrong especially that if the big three let it go slow that they would be vulnerable to the kickers.
I found the distance running arrogance showen by some posters a sign of ignorance track and field. There were two Olympic Medalist facing elimination but cutting away from 30 minute 10,000 pace railed against (yes they should have done in picture but the pace was so slow maybe it didn't warrant doing so). I wonder how many of the complaintants said that most of the race was boring.
