RE: Cheating at Marathons

So when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon, as it was rotating, do they get credit for just the distance they traveled or the distance they traveled amplified by the rotational effect relative to the Earth? This would put Armstrong and Aldrin in as the fastest men ever at any distance from 1 meter through 1000 miles.

They were good guys and US born, so I think this should be valid.

And like real records should be the records would be set at a level that would be hard to break.

It appears standards at Marathon Maniacs are stricter than Guinness. Which seeems sad since I bet way more people have heard of Guinness... in their defense though, they have a bizarre number of records and I'm sure its hard to figure out rules for all of them (browse the website, who makes up the rules for "MOST HULA HOOP ROTATIONS ON THE LEG IN THE ARABESQUE POSITION IN ONE MINUTE")

the correct answer is always the one that gives PM the most mileage. And then add 5% as just sort of a rounding error.

Also, to the other guy who asked the question about the astronauts - they don't get much credit in the frequent marathoner world. One small step? Get back to me when you've hit 1,000,000 small steps, Neil. Then we'll talk about medals.

Another thing is this: for every 7 hour time period that goes by I consider that the fact that I could have run/walked 26.2 miles in that amount of time fairly easily.

Think of this like the "conceded putt" in match play golf. If a putt is so short and automatic, the golfer need not bother tapping it in. Likewise, a 7 hour marathon would be so easy and automatic, I need not actually do it.

Thus, whether or not I actually covered 26.2 miles in any given 7 hour period is not really the point and you're damn straight I'm counting each one as another marathon. This is how I do 3 marathons per day plus have an extra 3 hours left over just for "me" time.

I'm currently making up some rules that will allow me to complete several conceded marathons in overlapping time periods. Think of a one mile loop course that has a single chip mat. Only, instead of split times, this chip mat is starting line of a new and different "official marathon" that I also happen to RD. So, I will complete the first mile of "I-run Marathon A" while simultaneously starting "I-run Marathon B", and so on. After 26.2 miles, I've completed the first marathon and only have one mile to go to complete marathon "B".

I guess there will need to be a second chip mat .2 miles into the loop in order to record my many finish times or I can always just record whatever round number I am close to when I was probably at 26.2 miles each time around.

I don't understand why so many people complete an entire marathon before starting another one when the miles can work just as well for both.

And, of course, I'm not actually running or walking these loops, remember. Just using the conceded putt analogy that I could do it so it counts just the same.

What I'm working on now is whether I should make the loop smaller, so I can start new marathons more frequently or if I should just cover the entire loop with chip mats so that I am continually starting and finishing marathons as frequently as current technology will allow.

This scheme will surely get me into the Marathon Maniacs Hall of Fame

Really you do not need chip mats do you?

If you just have a pedometer with you and know that every mile you start a new marathon, once you compete your first one, then you are completing one every mile.

Honestly unless you catch me, and as a Letsrun poster you know I probably have elite speed, or you outlive me, I will always hold the record. Sure you could decide to start a new one every 1/2 mile, or every second, or hundredth of a second but that would just be creating your own set of rules for yourself and that really is not the spirit of competition.

I think slade has truly captured the art of filling up your entire house with record breaking medals!!! Just think how many people would be in awe of this amazing feat of fitness!!!! What a hero he could become!!!!

Also, I think that anything over 13.1 is technically over halfway, so it my macro-PM rounding is correct, a marathon is technically only about 13.2 now.

I'm back onto looking at race results. We can question the "rules" of "records" all we want, but end of day, it's not folling the "finish a 26.2 mile race" that should be the easiest to DQ her on.

I ran a list of Marathonguide.com 2013 results. A bunch of 4:30-5:30-6+hr finishes.

The overall results PDF on their website shows a 5:40! I wonder if she tried to cheat and someone called her out on it. The results got uploaded to marathon guide before they were corrected.

ultrasignup is worth a browse. For a lot of her races, she's in the 60/70% runner ranking... a couple of 80%ers. But then there are some interesting outliers.

Again, the splits seem legit. Just a lotta sudden speed for someone running so often so slowly at other distances.

This is like the 20th incident that makes zero sense. I wonder what the excuse is/was for this one. We cant use the "she is a smart racer and really lights it up on the back half" excuse for dual marathon times for the same event. :-)

Also, interesting to note that any finish time on a marathon course that is NOT HER RACE actually has irregular minutes and seconds associated with finish time. No more 4:45:00, 6:15:00, 5:30:00, etc.......and the icing on the cake, her 100-miler in 2013 that came in at a nice round 23:00:00!!!!

Marathonguide posts unofficial results and if a mistake is made then they won't correct the results. Anyone who runs marathons knows this. If your name is misspelled or your time is incorrect then it never gets fixed on marathonguide.

There is a cheater listed in those results. Leader of the thread. This must be her marathon PR time.

She started early and finished much longer than 4:06. I saw her start, saw her several times on the course and was there when she finished.

This is what actual proof of cheating is. Several of us are eyewitnesses to this cheat by Ms. Tortorice.

This other result is quite questionable since she did no other races faster than around 5:30 last year.

I have close contacts that saw cheating at Cactus Rose Race as well as at the Wild Hair. I will get the details and report back once I obtain them.

Assuming PM's marathon course are Boston certified, marathon courses correct? It appears that her races are pretty darn loose with respect to course distance and timing.

Is there evidence that her races are "known" around town as the place to get your BQ? With no timing chips, obvious ability to post/report whatever time one chooses, and the looped course/honor system in place, I might suspect that if people want to pick up a rather quick and easy BQ, this would be the place to do it. In many of her races, nobody is actually present during or after the event. Finishers simply report their time to her and she posts it, no questions asked. Boom, its now official.

What is the word on the street of this abuse? If any? Just wondering if this fraud is spilling into one of our most cherished races, the Boston Marathon.

She lists the race as a BQ course. The question is how many people have qualified at her races.

I just opened up about 15 races from this year randomly, and she includes a BQ column. But, most of the times are not even close to BQs. One that looks like it is - a 40 yr old with a 3:16 almost makes you think at least one runner there is honest since he chose not to round that final minute ;)

No one has seen anything about PM. Just speculation.

But we finally have a valid sighting.

Angela collects marathons too. And she is guilty of having a false times in two consecutive weeks.
