Zach Bitter just ran a 6:39 while Walmsley baby struggled to get a sub 7:00 hours in. Even 50 year olds have been faster than Jim over 100k. That's a fact!

Walmsley is not running in the Olympics. He only made the Marathon trails as dead last.

People get real here, Walmsley is a good trail runner but he is not elite when it comes to Marathon or 100k races.

I did some research on that and ranked Walmsley around 70th based on his half time and distance capabilities. That ranking may be a little worse after CIM but my projection shows Walmsley capable of 214-215.

Maybe the goal is not to make the team. Maybe the goal it to have people speak about him and his shoe sponsor, which is alrrady pretty successfull in the trail specific models but wokld want more brand recognitiln on the roads? That goal seems close to be reached I guess.

Oh and that training week i guess is very compatible with preparing a trail ultra. Nothing too road-marathon specific yet. Kinda clever I would say.

2:14-2:15 is what everybody predicts for Walmsley on a flat course. I think we can agree on that. But still he has to run it and Atlanta will not be flat.

I have seen many mediocre runners go sub 2:15 this year. I would expect Jim to be at least 3 minutes up the road on these guys.

Please. A 2:15 ish Marathon runner is not a mediocre runner.

"Just" running 150 miles a week is not going to put anyone into the team. But it's a good start to the process.

I met Jim one time at the Running Event. He is a class act, and amazingly mellow.

Jim is such a good friend of Elton John.

150 miles of easy running and just 20 min workout? Cool story Jim.

Remember, he is doing what he loves to do. Who wouldn't want to run 150 miles p/week if it was your passion. The guy has courage and guts, for sure. He's also very fast, which is admirable and he's a likely role model for some, all credit to him. Does he have a contingency plan if he gets injured, though ? What will he do when he retires.

My objective, non-hater/non-fanboy opinion:

Uli Steidl and Jim Walmsley have very similar track PRs (Jim's are just a bit faster except for Uli has a faster 10,000 m PR) and Uli has run sub 2:14 for the marathon. While Uli and Jim haven't run any of the same ultras, Sage Canaday did break Uli's CR at White River and Max King broke Uli's Chuckanut CR - both runners that Jim has been faster than in recent years. So by this reasoning, I believe Jim to be capable of running a marathon at least as fast as Uli, if not faster. That being said, the problem for Jim is that there are other runners who 1) specialize in the marathon and 2) are faster than him - Rupp, Fauble, Ward, Parker, etc. Being capable of a 2:12 doesn't help when others are capable of running several minutes faster.
